Schaumburg, Palatine go 1-2 at Detweiller

Senior Colette Falsey took first in 17:07, leading second-ranked Schaumburg to the team title with 83 points at the 23rd annual Peoria Notre Dame Invitational at Detweiller Park on Saturday.

Top-ranked Palatine took second with 91 points followed by Downers Grove North (127 points), York (138 points), and Glenbard West (173 points) in the 53-team field.

Senior Karen Lesiewicz (17:27) and senior Britten Petrey (17:29) finished seventh and eighth for the Schaumburg attack, while sophomore Hannah Combs (17:51) added a 21st-place finish in an impressive victory for the Saxons.

Falsey, Lesiewicz, and Petrey ran together in a solid opening mile and once again the trio closed with a bang.

Falsey found another gear in taking the lead in the final 600 meters and didn't look back in taking home the victory as the Saxons made a big early season statement.

"They all ran a relaxed and controlled race," said Schaumburg coach Jon Macnider of the Saxons' victory. "We're still closing the gaps, but we're getting there. It was a good team race."

Senior Courtney Brown (17:12) led for most of the way before taking second in leading Palatine. Junior Emily Schulte (17:33) and sophomore Tess Wassowicz (17:37) took 10th and 12th in the Pirates' attack.

"We wanted to win, but as a team we can't be too upset," said Palatine coach Joe Parks of his team's effort. "Good things are happing and we're heading in the right direction."
