Gawinski gets win in first start for Grayslake Central

Mark Gawinski made the most of his first varsity start, tossing 4 shutout innings, striking out five and allowing 2 hits to lead Grayslake Central's baseball team to a 8-4 nonconference road victory over Wauconda on Saturday.

"Mark did a great job, and we played solid defense behind him," Rams coach Troy Whalen said. "Offensively, the kids continue to swing the bats well."

Andrew Hosford homered and singled, and Angelo Gargano doubled and singled for Grayslake Central (27-7). Both players had 3 RBI.

Mike Gentile added a pair of singles, and Jackson White and Derek Idstein both doubled.

Jeff Jackson hit a triple, and Drew Hylen doubled for the Bulldogs.

Lake Zurich 10, Evanston 8: Outfielder Danny Johnson made a pair of diving catches and caught another flyball while running into the fence, as the Bears staved off a rally by the visiting Wildkits in the nonconference game.

"Danny Johnson saved the game defensively," coach Gary Simon said.

Lake Zurich (19-15) used 3 bunt singles during a 6-run fifth, after Evanston had scored twice in the top ofthe frame to pull even at 4-4.

Anthony Orlando homered, singles, scored twice and drove in two runs for the Bears, while Parker Asmann had a double, single and 3 RBI. Lake Zurich also got doubles from Kyle Sanders and Tim Bavester.

Mundelein 4, Highland Park 3: Luis Carrasco pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, as the visiting Mustangs held on for the nonconference win.

Carrasco threw 61/3 innings, with Ben Mahar finishing up for the save.

Bill McMahon went 2-for-3 with a double to pace Mundelein offensively. Colin Franklin also doubled in the win.

Antioch sweeps Marengo: Alex Grimm singled and doubled, Chris Terzic pitched a complete-game 3-hitter with 6 strikeouts, as the Sequoits won 4-1 in the opener of the nonconference doubleheader.

The Sequoits' Ryan Dragoon went the distance on the mound in Game 2, striking out 10 and allowing 3 hits in an 8-2 win.

Brett Prather doubled and had 2 RBI for Antioch (17-16).

Lakes splits with Richmond-Burton: After dropping the opener 9-1 on Senior Day, the host Eagles captured an 8-6 win for their 22nd win.

In Game 2, Paul Kukulka struck out 11 in earning the win. He helped himself at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI.

Travis Vanderwall went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Lakes (22-11), and Willis Massie went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Libertyville 5, Burlington-Central 3: Chad Uhler's game-winning RBI in the botton of the sixth put the Wildcats on top. Darwin Townsend allowed 8 hits and struck out one for Libertyville (21-11).

Uhler had 2 hits.

Vernon Hills 3, Hoffman Estates 0: Scott Kempel, Tyler Feece, MJ Crowley and Cesar Gallegos combined for a 3-hit shutout for the Cougars.

The pitchers were supported by the defense, led by catcher Chrs Marras, who gunned out two would-be base-runners.

The Cougars scored first in the first when Eric Oberwise scored after a two-out single by Jerami Cruzado.

Vernon Hills added insurance in the bottom of the seventh when Kempel and Oberwise reached on infield errors. Kempel scored on a single by Gallegos, and Oberwise scored on a groundout by Chris Argianas.

Grayslake Central 2, Mundelein 0: On Friday, sophomore Mark Ash made his first varsity start a memorable one.

The righty spun a 2-hitter, fanning six, in leading the Fox Valley Conference champs to the nonconference win.

It was the sixth victory in a row and 11th in 12 games for Grayslake Central (26-7).

"Mark did a great job of keeping the ball down and throwing three pitches for strikes," Rams coach Troy Whalen said. "He showed great composure and poise for a sophomore."

Offensively for the winners, Austin Leggett had a 2-RBI double and Andre Hosford stroked a pair of singles.
