Lake Villa District Library's BookArt winners:

There were 109 entries in this year's Lake Villa District Library's BookArt Annual Contest for Kids. The library invited children ages 5 through 12 to make an original collage celebrating books and reading. Entries were judged by a panel of art teachers from local elementary schools. First-, second- and third-place winners were chosen in each of three age categories, as well as an overall Best of Show winner. Ruthanne Tidei, 12, won Best of Show; Brooke Buchtenkirch, 11, took first place in the 10-12-year-old category. The collages will be displayed at the library through Nov. 30. To see the winning entries online, visit lvdl.org. The library is at 1001 E. Grand Ave., Lake Villa.

Holiday help in Mundelein:

Parents living in the Mundelein area can shop for holiday presents and not have to worry about their kids' care during a special event at Mundelein High School. The Parent Shop and Go will run from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 12 in the school's north gym. Members of the Student Leadership organization will keep an eye on the kids, offering games, crafts, dancing and even pizza. Santa Claus will visit, too. The cost is $5 per hour per child. Families who have more than three children at the event will be charged $3 an hour per child. Proceeds will benefit the Interact Club's adopt-a-family drive.

Former state representative honored:

Kathleen Ryg received kudos Tuesday night from the College of Lake County board for her years of service as a Democratic state representative. Ryg, a Vernon Hills resident, was lauded in a resolution passed by the board. In addition to the seven years she spent as a state lawmaker, Ryg was commended for 20 years she put in on CLC's Southlake campus advisory committee. Ryg departed office to become president of Voices for Children, a statewide policy and advocacy organization.
