CLC trustee heads state group

College of Lake County Trustee Barbara Oilschlager has stepped into a second role as head of a statewide organization. Oilschlager, a Grayslake resident, is the new president of the Illinois Community College Trustees Association. Oilschlager took the reins of the state group on July 1 and will serve as president for one year. Oilschlager intends to focus on working with state legislators on boosting funding for community colleges. She also said she wants to improve the recruitment and retention rates for Illinois' 48 community colleges. "This is a crucial time for community colleges," Oilschlager said, "especially with the shrinking level of funding from the state of Illinois." She joined CLC's elected board in 1989.

Information for home schooling

Grayslake Area Public Library District plans an evening with information designed for parents who teach their children at home instead of having them attend conventional schools. The free event, set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, will have employees providing a tour of the library for those involved in home schooling. There also will be an overview of all library programs and services that are available for home schooling. For more information, call the library at (847) 223-5313.

Community forum chatter

Grayslake Elementary District 46 board members will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, with some discussion expected on whether another community forum should be held. The meeting will be at Grayslake Middle School on Library Lane, just west of Route 83. District 46 Superintendent Ellen Correll and board President Mary Garcia are slated to lead the discussion about the forum. Spending and other financial issues were the primary focus of the inaugural District 46 forum June 17. Roughly 80 attended the event at the middle school. However, board members last month were uncommitted on whether another informal chat session would be held with taxpayers. Several parents said they sought the forum because District 46's elected board members, similar to those elsewhere, generally do not provide immediate answers to the public when questions are asked at regular meetings.
