Wrap: Jesse's walkoff HR propels C-G to win

It might have been Woodstock that got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead after one inning of play, but a walkoff home run from Ellen Jesse allowed Cary-Grove to walk away with a 5-4 win over Woodstock Thursday in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division softball game at Cary-Grove.

A tight game throughout, Woodstock held the 1-0 lead until the Trojans (11-4, 3-2) went up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning following a 2-RBI double from Meredith Riemann. Cary-Grove would add an insurance run the fifth to go up 3-1 before Woodstock tallied a 3-run sixth to retake the lead at 4-3.

With her only hit of the day, Jesse once again turned the leaderboard, this time for good.

"It was a real exciting game for both teams," said C-G coach Tammy Olson. "It was close until the very end."

Maggie O'Brien added some timely offense for the Trojans going 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored. Kristen Bauer (7-2) battled through the complete game allowing 3 earned runs while striking out three from inside the circle.

Softball

CL South 2, McHenry 1: Crystal Lake South (9-6, 2-3) took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning and held on for this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win behind a solid showing in the circle from Jessica Gable. Gable allowed just 1 unearned run on 2 hits while fanning five in the complete game effort.

Vicki Pyan (1-for-3, RBI) and Michelle Bump (2-for-3, 2b, RBI) provided just enough offensive support to lift the Gators past McHenry.

"It was a really good game," said coach Scott Busam. "It was nice to pull out a tough game like that."

Johnsburg 3, Prairie Ridge 0: Prairie Ridge (10-5, 4-1) suffered its first Fox Valley Conference Fox Division loss of the year getting 1-hit by Johnsburg. Erika Trojan was inside the circle for the Wolves allowing 3 runs on 3 hits while striking out five in 3 innings of work.

Kari Rankin had the lone hit of the game to break up the Amanda Daly no-hitter for Prairie Ridge.

Huntley 11, Grayslake Central 9: Led offensively by Jenna Mychko (3-for-3, 4 runs, RBI) and Amanda Wisniewski (3-for-4, 3b, HR, 4 RBI), who was just a double away from hitting the cycle, Huntley (9-7, 4-1) earned this Fox Valley Conference Fox Division victory.

Sam Clemons (9-4) was inside the circle for the Red Raiders allowing 9 runs (7 earned) on 6 hits while fanning 9 batters going the distance.

Baseball

Prairie Ridge 11, Whitney Young 10: Prairie Ridge (11-6) recorded its fifth consecutive win out-hitting nonconference opponent Whitney Young 15-9 for the 1-run victory. Will Mack got the game-winning RBI in the seventh inning to cap off a 3-for-4 day at the plate. T.J. Swank also went 3-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBI, and David Mitroff contributed with a 2-for-3 stint at the dish including a double and 2 RBI.

Steve Drain (1-0) got his first win of the season allowing one run on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts in 4 innings of work.

Immaculate Conception 8, Westminster Christian 4: Out-hit 8-3, Westminster Christian (16-4-1) dropped this nonconference matchup. Ryan Donahue was on the bump for the loss striking out two in 2¿ innings pitched. At the dish, Tyler Beachler led the Warriors going 2-for-3.

Bartlett 10, East Aurora 7: With timely offense from Alex VanNess (hit, 2 RBI), Kyle Burden (3-for-4) and Tucker Erickson (2b), Bartlett (9-5, 8-4) took home this Upstate Eight Conference win. Kevin Carmody got the victory in relief allowing one run on one hit with three strikeouts in 4¿ innings of work.

Girls soccer

Willows Academy 1, Elgin Academy 0: Bianca Swegler recorded 12 saves for Elgin Academy (5-6, 2-4) as it fell to Willows Academy in Independent School League action.

Bartlett 8, Streamwood 0: with 4 goals from Luisa DeSario, Bartlett (5-3-2, 3-3-1) walked away with this 8-0 Upstate Eight Conference shutout. Becca Cronin added a pair of goals, and single knocks came from Abbi Palmer and Sam Barone.

Barone added an assist, and Palmer dished out two passes. In goal, Erin Zaidman recorded one save to maintain the shutout.

Streamwood (5-8-3, 2-4-1) was unable find the back of the net.

Hampshire 4, St. Edward 1: Kelly Plichta and Alex Field each had a goal and an assist as Hampshire (7-3-1) won this nonconference matchup. Christine Schumacher and Kayla Meyer each added goals for the Whip-Purs and Fummi Makinde had an assist. Alex Heinrich had 3 saves in goal for Hampshire. Katy Lally had the lone goal of the game for St. Edward. Brittany Brozek recorded the assist. In the net for the Green Wave (6-4-1), Taylor Hunsberger collected 8 saves.

Boys volleyball

Addison Trail d. Bartlett: Bartlett (9-8) came up just shy in this nonconference loss to Addison Trail, which beat the Hawks in two games by matching scores of 25-17, 25-17.

Despite the loss, the Hawks had valiant efforts from Chris Guimon (7 kills, 2 aces, 7 digs), Scott Kuehn (4 kills), John Campolo (5 kills), Jason Theobald (15 assists, 3 blocks) and Jeremy Sanchez (6 digs).

College softball

ECC takes two from Oakton: Knotted at 2-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 1, Rachel Esterino (2-for-3, 2 RBI) had the game-winning RBI for Elgin Community College (8-18, 4-8), which walked away victorious from this ISCC contest. The Spartans took the back end of this doubleheader with a 7-0 forfeit.

Megan McGovern (2-for-2, run), Amanda Price (hit, run) and Stephanie Esterino (RBI) contributed in the opening win. Jessica Schue was inside the circle.
