Wrap: Jacobs leads in Flyers Classic
Jacobs pitcher Ryan Lesner couldn't wait to get out on the baseball diamond.
While other area teams had begun their season, Lesner and his teammates had to stand by idly and wait for their turn to play because of the weather.
It looks as if the Eagles will have to wait yet again.
In the opening round of play in the Schaumburg Flyers Classic on Thursday, between Jacobs and Wheaton Warrenville South, a fifth-inning rainstorm at Alexian Field caused play to be suspended until 10 a.m. on Saturday at Jacobs High School.
Jacobs (0-0) was leading 3-0 and an out away from a victory when the game was suspended.
The second game between Prairie Ridge and Joliet Catholic was postponed to 4:30 p.m. today and was tentatively scheduled to be played at St. Charles North.
"It was amazing (to get out and play)," Lesner said. "We've been cooped up all winter and everyone has played but us, so it was just really nice to play."
The senior pitcher cruised through 4¿ scoreless innings, recording 4 strikeouts while letting up 5 hits in the process.
"Ryan was really able to mix up his pitches and keep hitters off balance," Jacobs coach Eric Sanders said.
The Eagles, who were the home team Thursday, got on the board in the bottom of the first, on a dropped fly ball in leftfield off the bat of third basemen Mike Castillo.
The hard-hit ball was ruled an error and leadoff batter Jon Szalonek (2 walks) scored on the misplay. Castillo came home on the next play, an RBI groundout from right fielder Matt Igara.
The Eagles got on the board again in the fourth when center fielder Brandon Stroh scored on a passed ball. This marked the third unearned run of the day for Jacobs.
Wheaton Warrenville South (1-2) starter Nick Egan allowed only 1 hit and no earned runs but issued 7 walks in 4 innings.
Sanders, despite walking away with neither a win nor loss Thursday, is just happy to get his players on the field.
"As soon as we hit the field we're off and running," Sanders concluded. "With all the work they've done this offseason, they've been itching to get here and play."

Cary-Grove 10, Barrington 7, susp.:ŒThe rain finally stopped the parade of fourth-inning runs by Cary-Grove on Thursday.
Actually, the outburst from above just suspended the 9-run outburst by the Trojans. They still had runners at second and third with one out and led visiting Barrington 10-7 when umpires halted the nonconference game.
It will resume at that point at 4:30 p.m. today at Barrington.
"We haven't been down much," said Cary-Grove coach Don Sutherland of his 5-0 team's 7-1 deficit. "(Barrington's Ryan Nolan) was pitching so well and throwing 3 pitches for strikes.
"We took good approaches and kind of wore him out."
Nolan allowed only an unearned run and 1 hit in 3 innings for 5-0 Barrington. But 3 walks and singles by Chris Waylock and David Ptaszek brought Tom Unak in to replace Nolan.
Unak got a force out on a grounder but 2 more walks, a 2-run single by Nick Hammonds, an RBI single by Kegan Mascarella and a 2-run double by Chris Waylock put the Trojans up 10-7.
"Our offense has been struggling a bit," Sutherland said. "We've just been waiting for it to come alive and waiting for the hitters to be patient."
Having 7 walks lead to 5 runs is uncharacteristic of Barrington's start.
"The bottom line is you throw strikes and see what happens," said Barrington coach Jim Hawrysko. "When you're up 7-1 you throw strikes."
Barrington went ahead with a 7-run third where Jack Golek had a 2-run single, Steve Janezic lined a 2-run double to right-center and Mark Minner dropped an RBI single behind first base.
