Altrusa celebrates Woman of the Year and past recipients

Altrusa International Club of Elgin recently honored Sandy Ziros of South Elgin as its 68th annual Woman of the Year recipient at a dinner celebration held in her honor May 18 at Villa Olivia in Bartlett.

Over 100 guests, family members and Altrusa members were in attendance. Ziros was acknowledged as a person of great generosity in the community for helping others in need and Elgin Mayor David Kaptain read a City of Elgin proclamation in her honor.

Altrusa member Kathe Pava, who nominated Ziros for the recognition, noted that "with all Sandy does to assist families by organizing fundraising events for them, she is just about her own organization".

Ziros was congratulated by former Altrusa Woman of the Year recipients. They are pictured, top left, clockwise: Marge Haefliger (2004), Dr. Christine Mueller (2014), Nancy Schueneman (2002), Murna Hansemann (1996), Betsy Couture (2016), Mary Camacho (1984), Sandy Ziros, and Betty Brown (1975).

The Altrusa Woman of the Year acknowledges women in the greater Elgin area community who embody the Altrusa keys of: Amity, Loyalty, Reciprocity, Unity, Service and Achievement. The first Altrusa Woman of the Year was the late Harriet Armstrong of Elgin in 1950.
