Delores & the Pickin'-Fretter return to the Elgin Coffeehouse Feb. 18

The lively sounds and close harmonies of the Kansas duo calling themselves Delores & the Pickin'-Fretter will return to Elgin's Highland Avenue Coffeehouse on Saturday, Feb. 18. Their energy and humor promise to engage and inspire the audience as in their 2014 performance. Their creative instrumentation will intrigue and amuse their listeners, and their spirit, as always, will give people some good old, down-home comfort.

Jenny Stover-Brown and Jeffrey Faus will bring their eclectic blend of folk, rock, and gospel to the Elgin folk stage from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren, 783 W. Highland Ave. They will be joined for selected numbers by master fiddler Louise Brodie from Lombard.

Stover-Brown has been a piano player and singer since she was a child. Faus, also a singer since childhood, taught himself to play guitar in high school. They came together for some informal picking as early as 2001, but their performing life took off when Stover-Brown bought an accordion she named "Delores" for $50 at a garage sale.

They appear at venues in the Wichita, Kansas area, ranging from clubs to church events. They have given musical leadership at Church of the Brethren denominational gatherings. They are regular performers at an annual Song and Story Fest.

The duo also will lead the Sunday morning worship with a dynamic mix of song and story at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 19 at the Elgin church.

In addition to traditional gospel tunes and songs of faith, their wide-ranging repertoire includes material by Alison Kraus and Robert Plant, Van Morrison, Gillian Welch, the Beatles, Nancy Griffith, Joni Mitchell, and other, as well as their own compositions.

When they are not making music, Stover-Brown is a school social worker and mother of two. Faus is vice president of Trees for Life, a nonprofit organization working to break the cycles of poverty and hunger and to care for the earth. They both live in Wichita, Kansas.

All are welcome. Friends and neighbors from the community are invited to join this always friendly audience. Admission is free; donations will be appreciated. There will be light refreshments.

The community is also welcome at the Sunday morning service. For information, call (847) 741-5124 or visit www.hacob.org or www.facebook.com/HighlandAvenueCOB.
