Learn about stroke prevention June 11 at Sherman West Court

Elgin, Ill. - Stroke prevention will highlight a discussion June 11 at Advocate Sherman West Court in Elgin.

Dr. Mohamed Ghumra, a neurologist on staff at Sherman Hospital, will discuss important stroke risk factors, including hypertension, myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, blood lipids, sleep apnea and its associated risks involved with cardiovascular complications, and symptomatic carotid artery stenosis.

He will also discuss the role certain lifestyle factors - tobacco and alcohol use, physical activity, diet - play in stroke prevention.

Stroke kills almost 130,000 Americans each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 795,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke annually.

The event will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at the rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility, 1950 Larkin Ave. in Elgin.
