'Writing the Torah': Torah scribe to speak in Geneva

Yochanan Nathan, Chicago's outstanding sofer (Torah scribe), will demonstrate how a Torah is created and written, sharing, as well, the rituals and laws that govern the writing of a Torah, and finally calligraphy examples of how the letters of the Torah are written.

The Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors in Geneva invites the community to join in "Writing the Torah" at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 3, in the lower level meeting room at Geneva Public Library, 127 James St., Geneva.

This is a unique opportunity to see up close how the Torah, the first five books of the Bible, often referred to as the Old Testament, has been written for thousands of years.

Nathan is a sofer scribe, a professional scribe who writes, inspects, repairs and sells Torah scrolls and other Jewish text on parchment. Jewish law requires that these items be written by hand, following a set of strict standards. For more information about Nathan, visit his website, soferscribe.com.

Tickets are $8 pre-sale, $10 regular sale, $12 at the door.
