Follow the progress of 2015 Lincoln Funeral Train project

At 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, the Dundee Township Historical Society welcomes William Werst, executive director of the 2015 Lincoln Funeral Train.

After President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, his body and that of his son Willie were returned to Illinois for burial in Springfield.

"The United States," a private railroad car for the president, was the equivalent of what we know today as Air Force One. The car was converted to serve as the funeral car.

A group of very dedicated people have been working in David H. Kloke's shop in Elgin to recreate the funeral car. In 2015, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's death, this train will take that 12-day journey, from Washington, D.C., to Illinois.

The program on Sunday will consist of the history of the Lincoln Train, the plans and progress of the recreation of the funeral car, and its commemorative route beginning April 21, 2015, 150 years to the day from when the original train started for Illinois in 1865.

This presentation, which is open to the public, will be held at the historical society museum, 426 Highland Ave. in West Dundee. For details, call (847) 428-6996 or visit www.facebook.com/DundeeTownshipHistoricalSociety. There is no admission fee. Donations are appreciated.
