Women In Management Fox Valley starts new year of speakers

Women in Management Fox Valley kicks off its new year of speakers on Thursday, Sept. 11, with a presentation topic of "Utilizing Your Skills and Interests as Volunteers" by Daryl Rubin, director of development for Food for Greater Elgin.

It will be held at the Elgin Country Club, 2575 Weld Road in Elgin, with networking at 11:30 a.m., followed by the luncheon and program at noon. Meetings adjourn promptly at 1:30 p.m.

Cost for members is $22 or $25 for nonmembers. Area women business owners and managers are welcome to attend this month's presentation. Reservations must be made for attendance online at www.wimfoxvalley.org.

Led by moderator and WIM member Nancy Guthrie, president of Business Matters in Elgin, Rubin will present how leveraging business skills for volunteerism benefits the community and enriches personal and professional goals.

With more than 25 years in fundraising and development, she joined Food for Greater Elgin in 2013. She is an innovator and experienced leader in the nonprofit sector, where she has raised more than $5 million and coordinated more than 100 events in the Chicago area. Prior to her current role, she spent 17 years as director of special events at the Center for Enriched Living in Highland Park and 5 years at Rainbows for All Children.

A key to Rubin's success is how she leverages the strengths of volunteers. From small high net worth donor dinners to annual benefit galas and golf outings, her teams' events have consistently exceeded fundraising goals in part from managing volunteers in all aspects of the events. She has involved teams of volunteers that have included interns, corporate CEOs, and entrepreneurial women. Her approach to developing volunteers is simple: understand each volunteer's abilities and experiences and allow them to impart who and what they know.

"Our WIM members are successful entrepreneurs, managers, and dedicated community volunteers," said Loni Mecum, this year's president of WIM Fox Valley. "We look forward to hearing Daryl's ideas on the value of integrating one's personal and business strengths to benefit community volunteerism."

Mecum has been a member of WIM Fox Valley since 1997. A retired professional, she is the former city clerk for the city of Elgin.

Mecum added, "We look forward to an exciting year of speakers and topics that will enrich our members and their businesses."

Upcoming speakers include Ola Muhammed, former architect and owner of Ola La! Ijorere in downtown Elgin, who will address "Staying Relevant in Today's Market" on Oct. 9, and Linda Deering, CEO of Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, who will present "Leadership Skills and the Healthcare Industry" on Dec. 11.
