Young Swedish Singers Concert hosted by Elgin's Good Shepherd Church

Good Shepherd Church in Elgin is excited to be hosting a free concert for Elgin and surrounding communities.

The Young Swedish Singers, a 34-member gospel singing group from Hasslehom, Skane, Sweden, will appear in concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at the church located on the corner of Nesler Road and Route 20 in Elgin

The group's tour includes stops in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa, June 18-July 2, 2014.

This youth choir, founded by director Birgitta Rosland in 1991, comes from a very musical Lutheran church in the far south of Sweden. Choir members range from teenagers to young adults in their early 20s. This is their fifth U.S. tour in 12 years.

The Young Swedish Singers' concert, sung mostly in English, will include gospel, hymns, and Swedish folk music.

The choir is directed by Birgitta Rosland and the choir's pastor, Rev. Bo Johansson, will travel with the choir, providing spiritual guidance to the tour.

The choir will be hosted by approximately 300 families during their 2½-week tour. They will enjoy a day at Mt. Rushmore and will visit downtown Chicago on July 4 before boarding their flight back to Sweden. Of course, there will be stops at a mall and some local attractions during the trip.

Choir members have raised funds to cover not only their airfare to the U.S., but their bus transportation for the entire tour.

All offering and CD income received during the tour will benefit Shepherd's Canyon Retreat, a nonprofit ministry in Arizona, providing counseling retreats for clergy and their spouses.
