Full-day kindergarten in Dist. 300

Full-day kindergarten will be offered at more schools in Community Unit District 300 next year.

The tuition-based program will cost $225 per month and will be offered at Algonquin Lakes, Dundee Highlands, Eastview, Gary D. Wright, Gilberts, Hampshire, Lake in the Hills, Liberty, Lincoln Prairie, Westfield and Neubert elementary schools.

Each school will have between one and three full-day kindergarten classrooms, depending on space and enrollment.

For parents who are able to provide transportation, kindergarten students may attend a school other than their base school for the kindergarten year only.

Although some schools have students on a waiting list, there are places available at Neubert, Dundee Highlands, Eastview and Hampshire elementary schools.

Gilberts playground: The Gilberts Elementary School community has successfully raised more than $37,000 for the first phase of a new playground construction project.A dedication ceremony highlighting the achievements will be held on May 26 and will feature Connie Payton, wife of former Chicago Bear Walter Payton. When Gilberts Elementary School was built in 2007, it included a small playground. But in 2009, a committee was established to research options for installing a larger playground that would benefit all children in the Gilberts community to promote health and fitness. The Parent-Teacher Organization has led the charge toward raising about $165,000 in private donations for the equipment and construction. Spring break marked the end of the first phase in a five-phase project.The school will honor local businesses, community members and families who sponsored Phase I during a special ribbon ceremony from 9 a.m. Thursday May 26 at Gilberts Elementary, 729 Paperbark Lane.For information, contact school Principal Jeff King at (224) 484-5900.Buy a lunch, win a prize: Students in Huntley Area District 158 who buy a school lunch between May 16 and 27 will have the chance to win prizes like a bicycle or digital camera. Students who buy a lunch will receive a coupon for prizes. Students from kindergarten to fifth grade at Chesak, Conley, Leggee Mackeben and Martin elementary schools will go into a random drawing for one of two bikes, while students at Heineman and Marlowe middle schools will have the chance to win gift certificates or a digital camera set. High school students at Huntley High School could also win gift certificates or a digital camera.The drawings for gift certificates will take place between May 17 and 27, with digital camera drawings taking place on Tuesday, May 21.
