Northwestern Medicine physicians award six scholarships to local students

The medical staff of Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital is providing college scholarships to six local high-school graduates who plan to become physicians. The award is a one-year scholarship, in the amount of $2,500 that may be renewed each year for a maximum total of four years or up to $10,000.

2019 Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and Delnor Hospital Medical Staffs Scholarship winners are:

• Margaret Allen, a graduate of Wheaton North High School, will attend the University of Notre Dame;

• Bridgette Garnache, a graduate of Wheaton Warrenville South High School, will attend Emory University;

• Shruti Kolli, a graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School, will attend Johns Hopkins University;

• Neha Rajan, a graduate of Batavia High School, will attend Michigan State University;

• Makayla Thomas, a graduate of St. Charles North High School, will attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison;

• Richies Tiv, a graduate of Kaneland High School, will attend Northwestern University.

The scholarships are funded by the physicians on staff at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and Delnor Hospital.

"Our medical staff is proud to support the aspirations of our future doctors," said Dr. Ronald G. Severino, M.D., medical staff president, Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital. "We look forward to the day when these young students will become our colleagues."

A scholarship committee selected the winners based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, volunteer service opportunities, and an essay discussing what attracted them to health care, their plans for the future and the impact they hope to make as a physician.

"This scholarship program is an investment in our community," said Dr. Dean P. Shoener, M.D., medical staff president, Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital. "These promising young adults will be an asset to our profession."

Awards were presented to students by members of the Northwestern Medicine medical staff at their high school baccalaureate services.
