Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra Announces Open Rehearsal

On Sunday, March 17, the Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra will host "Do-It-Yourself Dvoák," an open rehearsal for advanced orchestra students, school orchestra and band directors, and private instructors. Participating students will be selected by recommendation from school and private teachers (space is limited).

The rehearsal will take place at the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts in Schaumburg under the direction of Symphony Orchestra director Joseph Malmquist. The first half of the evening will be dedicated to a condensed rehearsal of Dvoák's New World Symphony, followed by a performance of the full symphony, scheduled to start at 8:00 pm. Both rehearsal observation and performance will be open to the public and free to attend.

The breadth of music to be prepared in one evening will challenge students to approach the material and rehearsal with a new perspective. "It is a major developmental step to be able to play an entire symphony," says Orchestra Director Joseph Malmquist. "This gives us a chance to put one more entire cornerstone of the literature in their hands. It is also very near to a true professional experience; high school and college musicians have the grace of months of preparation, whereas a professional must prepare independently and put the final touches together on minimal rehearsal time."

School and private teachers are invited to recommend students to participate. Student recommendations and teacher participant registration is available at schaumburgyouthorchestra.org through Friday, February 8. The orchestra roster will be announced on Friday, February 22.

The Schaumburg Youth Orchestra (SYO) was founded in 1989 as a recreational and educational outlet for young advanced musicians. Originating as a string ensemble with 16 members, the program now boasts four ensembles, a chamber program, and current registration of nearly 200 students. The program has twice been awarded Youth Orchestra of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras. In 2014, Symphony Orchestra director Joseph Malmquist was awarded Youth Orchestra Conductor of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras. The Symphony Orchestra has performed not only locally, but also abroad with concert tours of Germany, Austria, Prague and Budapest, Japan, Italy, and most recently, London and Paris. The Schaumburg Youth Orchestra is a program of the Village of Schaumburg and is sponsored by the Prairie Center Arts Foundation.
