College of DuPage to host third annual STEM-CON April 28

Get your geek on and explore the areas of science, technology, engineering and math at the third annual STEM-CON from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn. This event is free and open to the public.

STEM-CON begins at 9 a.m. with a keynote talk "Curiosity as a Catalyst" by the Field Museum's Chief Curiosity Correspondent Emilie Grasley, the writer, producer, co-creator and host of "The Brain Scoop," an educational YouTube channel that goes behind-the-scenes at the Field Museum.

Interactive booths open at 10 a.m. after the keynote presentation.

Additional speakers will include, anti-cyberbullying advocate and ReThink inventor Trisha Prabhu, and a cryogenics demonstration by Fermilab's "Mr. Freeze."

STEM-CON features hands-on, interactive experiences through demonstrations and experiments designed to inform, entertain and spark interest in a variety of STEM topics, including biotechnology, Lego architecture, botany, nanotechnology, prairie ecology and restoration, the physics of flight with a real airplane on hand, reptile genetics and polymorphism, river system development, and robotics. In addition, exclusive workshops cover a broad range of topics such as crime scene investigation, cryptography, Lego Great Ball Contraption (GBC), a tours of the college's prairies.

While registration for this event is not required, some activities require participants preregister. Visit www.cod.edu for a list of workshops and to preregister.

Representatives from COD, as well as a wide range of STEM-based organizations and institutions, including American Surplus and Science, Argonne National Laboratory, Fermilab and SciTech Museum will be on hand to provide information and answer questions about education, innovations and careers in the STEM fields.

Refreshments will be available for purchase on-site during the event.
