Hanukkah party to feature Klezmer Quartet

The McHenry County Jewish Congregation will be celebrating the start of the eight-day holiday of Hanukkah with a party on Sunday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Traditional music, food and games will be featured as the congregation observes a holiday that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.

The celebration will feature an appearance by a quartet from the Chicago-based Maxwell Street Klezmer band, with guest singer Billy Kaplan, from 10 to 11 a.m. The quartet will lead a Hanukkah singalong and dance-along.

The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band has been central to the revival of this form of traditional Jewish music, which has its roots in Eastern Europe.

McHenry County Jewish Congregation grows its own potatoes and onions that are used to prepare fried potato pancakes, or latkes, and this Hanukkah treat will be served from 11 a.m. to noon.

Teens also will hold a bake sale to raise proceeds for a holiday shopping trip for a needy family. Members and guests are invited to enjoy a game of dreidel or an art project during this time as well.

All are welcome to attend the party, but RSVPs by Friday, Dec. 4, are requested by contacting the synagogue at (815) 455-1810 or mcjcoffice@yahoo.com. MCJC is at 8617 Ridgefield Road, Crystal Lake.
