April 23 and 27: CLC literary publications to hold readings/receptions

The College of Lake County's two award-winning annual literary publications, "Willow Review" and "Prairie Voices," will each hold readings to celebrate their contributors' talents. The "Willow Review" reading will be held at 7 p.m. on April 23 and "Prairie Voices" will be held from 6-8 p.m. on April 27.

Both events are free and open to the public and will be held at the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Copies of the new issues will be available at the readings. Due to construction of the new Science and Engineering Building, please enter at the B Wing and park in lot 4 or 5 to access the lower level C Wing.

On April 23 at 7 p.m., "Willow Review" will hold a reading and reception in Room C003. Contributors to this year's award-winning literary magazine will read from their original poetry and prose. Copies of the 41st anniversary issue will be available at the reading. "Willow Review" is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Its editor is Michael Latza, CLC English professor.

The journal's 2015 Illinois featured author is Wendy Finger. After earning a master's degree in occupational training and development from the University of Louisville, Finger worked in freelance journalism, social work and human resources. In 2008 she began creative writing through journaling, and took early retirement in 2012. Finger was a Skyway Conference Literary Festival prizewinner and is currently revising her novel, "Belle's Story."

On April 27 from 6-8 p.m. in Room C003, "Prairie Voices," CLC's award-winning literary/art journal, will host a reception honoring the students whose work was accepted for publication. This year's issue includes short stories, essays, poems and samples of visual art from more than 44 writers and 27 artists of all ages.

"Many of these students are published for the very first time," said Dr. Nicholas Schevera, editor and CLC English professor. "The writings cover a myriad of interesting topics and themes, including the unintended messages of fairytales, early childhood

reading experiences, the pleasures of traveling to Italy and Sicily, love lost and gained, death and loss of loved ones; memories of fathers and mothers; and the opportunities that education provides. Student artwork also figures prominently in the publication's design."

The 2013-14 edition of "Prairie Voices" won first place in the central division of the Community College Humanities Association 2014 Literary Magazine Competition, a first time for the CLC literary journal. Copies are available for purchase at CLC book stores. For more information, contact the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts division at (847) 543-2040.
