Parents: Add vaccines to your back-to-school list
Parents, it’s almost time to send your children back to school.
Between buying new clothes, shopping for every last supply and enjoying the last few weeks of summer, remember that, for the first time, students entering sixth through 12th grade are required to receive one dose of the TDaP vaccine to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis — commonly referred to as whooping cough — before school starts.
Note that there is a difference between the DTaP and TDaP vaccines. DTaP is designed to give children younger than 7 immunity against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, while TDaP is a booster immunization containing reduced doses of diphtheria and pertussis.
It provides continued protection from the three diseases for children starting at the age of 11 or 12 and adults.
Check with your family physician to determine if your child needs an updated immunization.
U-46 registration: Registration for Elgin Area School District U-46 will be available Thursday, Aug. 9, and Tuesday, Aug. 14. The following is a list of dates and time for elementary and secondary registration.
Elementary school registration is from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9.
