Noah's flood: Holy Cross Lutheran Church will present "Noye's Fludde" (Noah's Flood) by Benjamin Britten (who wrote this as a children's opera). The four performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 8 and at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9. First performed live in 1958, the opera was written to be performed in a church with the audience, or "congregation" to join in singing some of the hymns. A full orchestra includes members from Holy Cross, invited instrumentalists, the bell choir from Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, Lincolnshire, and a full percussion section. Donations of $10 for adults and $5 for youth 10 and younger will benefit the ELCA Domestic Flood Victims and is supported by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Steak fundraiser: Christ Lutheran Church in Vernon Hills will host a Wild West Steak Dinner and Silent Auction from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the church, 595 Deerpath Drive, Vernon Hills. Adults: $12, Children 5-10: $7, Children 5 and younger eat free. Clothes for the needy: Clothing in sizes ranging from infant to size 16 boys and girls is available the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Episcopal Church's Elijah's Mantle for Children in Need community service project, 31 Park Ave., Grayslake. Next dates are: May 9, June 13, July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. There is no cost. Blood drive: The United Protestant Church of Grayslake will host a LifeSource Blood Drive on Sunday, May 17, that is part of a Boy Scout Eagle Scout Project for Max Bonczar of Scout Troop 451. The church is located at 54 S. Whitney St. in downtown Grayslake and sponsors Troop 451. The blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the church's fellowship hall. Concert: The Elaine N. Sherman Fine Arts Fund presents "Hebrew Melody" at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 Sheridan Road, Glencoe. Cantor David Goldstein will be joined by both the Advent Chamber Orchestra and Kol Zimrah, Chicago's own Jewish community choir. Admission is free. Blood drive: Millburn Congregational United Church of Christ is conducting a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, May 17. Golf fundraiser: St. John Lutheran School, 501 W. Park Ave. in Libertyville, will hold a golf outing Sunday, May 20, at Chevy Chase Country Club. Tee times begin at 4 p.m. for nine holes, scramble format. A buffet dinner will follow at 7 p.m. The cost is $60 per person for golf and dinner. Not a golfer? Bring the family and join everyone for Chef Walker's famous St. John Dinner Buffet for $20 per person. All proceeds from this event go toward the St. John Playground Fund. Friday Friends: Friday Friends has been organized within The Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church in Mundelein for the purpose of fun and fellowship. The group meets the second Friday of the month, each time at different members' homes. For details, call (847) 949-8670.
Recycling: On the third Sunday of each month, youth will man the recycle bin between services, from 9:30 to 10 a.m., and after the second service, after 11 a.m. Bring your old newspapers, junk mail and catalogs. Youth will be ready to assist with the unloading of your car as you drive up to the bin in the Grace parking lot. The recycle bin is in place on a daily basis, so come any time that is convenient for you. A portion of the cash credits for all paper donations will be used toward a green gift for the community. Grief support group: Faith Lutheran Church announces the formation of a GriefShare Support Group, which provides support for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. For seniors: The senior group, The Primetimers, meets at The Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church in Mundelein the fourth Monday of the month for refreshments, book studies and guest speakers.
