Antioch’s Gofron delivers

Antioch’s girls basketball team needs a healthy Lindsey Gofron if it’s going to be successful in the North Suburban Prairie this season.

The Sequoits hope Saturday is a sign of things to come.

Gofron scored a season-high 10 points (two 3-pointers) to go along with 5 rebounds and 4 steals, as Antioch won its division opener 43-41 over North Chicago.

The Sequoits overcame a 31-27 deficit after three quarters.

Gofron underwent surgery last spring after tearing her Achilles tendon.

“Lindsey Gofron put together her best performance of the season,” said Tim Borries, whose Sequoits won their first game after opening the season with six straight losses.

Sophomore call-up Alex Fracek also sparked Antioch, grabbing a team-best 8 rebounds and scoring 3 points. Megan Borries scored a team-high 12 points for the Sequoits.

North Chicago’s Darniqua Hood led all scorers with 14 points.

Lakes 61, Round Lake 23: Terese McMahon scored 18 points and Ashlee Cunningham added 13, as the Eagles improved to 2-0 in the North Suburban Prairie.

Lakes (2-4) applied great defensive pressure in keeping Round Lake to just 5 points in the first half.

“We are improving on the defensive end, and in controlling the boards,” Lakes coach Pete Schneider said. “Round Lake may be a little down this year but they played hard and that says a great deal about their staff.”

Lakes continued to shoot well from the free-throw line, going 19 of 28.

“Offensively, we moved the ball well and got everyone involved,” Schneider said.

Heather Hurlbut chipped in 8 points for the Eagles, and Schneider said Amanda Smith and Nicole Mogged did a great job of distributing the ball and keeping the pace up.

“It was a great game to get some younger kids some great experience,” Schneider said. “I think the experience of playing some really tough tournament games is paying off for the team. They continue to improve and show such a great work ethic.”

Round Lake (3-5, 0-2) was led by Aaliyan Chastang with 5 points. Morgan Evins and Carmella Johnson each had 4.

Lake Zurich 60, Mundelein 42: Maisie Cox scored 17 points, and the Bears won their North Suburban Lake home opener.

Lake Zurich (7-1, 2-0) also received 12 points apiece from Katherine Anderson and Stephanie Schmid (two 3-pointers).

Mundelein (3-4, 1-1) was led by Amanda Davis’ 13 points. Freshman Natalie Busscher and Becca Woit had 9 and 8, respectively.

Grant 40, Wauconda 25: Morgan Jahnke’s 17 points, which included three 3-pointers, led Grant in the North Suburban Prairie game.

Sophomore McKenzie Burton added a season-high 13 points, including a 3, for Grant (3-5, 2-0).

Diana Enriquez’s 10 points paced Wauconda (2-4, 0-2), which lost its fourth in a row.

Maine South 61, Warren 40: The nonconference road loss dropped the Blue Devils’ record to 3-3.
