Enjoy popcorn, conservation films at First Friday events

A conservationist who shaped the modern environmental movement, a biologist and cancer survivor who links environmental factors to our health, and a look at the impact overfishing is having on oceans and us will be featured documentaries to be shown in downtown Libertyville as part of the community's First Friday event held in June, July and August.

The Lake County Health Department and Illinois Lakes Management Association are providing the environmental movie series at 6 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. each of the first Fridays inside Libertyville Village Hall, 118 W. Cook Ave. Admission is free and there will be free popcorn.

Here is the documentary lineup:

June 3 – "Green Fire"

A documentary about Aldo Leopold, a conservation legend who grew up in Iowa, graduated from Yale University and later in life had a house he referred to as “the shack” on the Wisconsin River north of Madison. The documentary shares how Leopold's land ethic and belief in caring about people and the land continues to inspire the environmental movement today.

July 1 – "Living Downstream"

The film follows Sandra Steingraber, a biologist, cancer survivor, and Illinois native, as she tracks scientific investigations into environmental links to cancer and other illness. Experts in toxicology and cancer research are featured, presenting their findings into pervasive chemicals such as a widely used herbicide.

Aug. 5 – "The End of the Line"

From the inevitable extinction of the bluefish tuna to the overpopulation of jelly fish, this documentary reveals what overfishing is doing to oceans and the global impact it has and will continue to have on the food supply.
