Sowa’s slam does it for Devils

Megan Sowa had only one hit in the Warren softball team’s 14-4 win over host Lake Forest on Tuesday.

It was grand.

Sowa’s grand slam and Jodie Hurd’s 4-for-4 day, which included an RBI triple, highlighted the Blue Devils’ North Suburban Lake Division victory. Amy Ricci had a great game as well, going 3-for-3, as Warren improved to 12-2-1 and 4-0 in the NSC Lake.

Winning pitcher Jana Wagner struck out nine in 6 innings, walking none and allowing 6 hits. The Blue Devils trailed 1-0 after three innings before scoring 10 runs in the fourth.

Vernon Hills 2, Wauconda 0: Jenn Claussen fired a complete-game 1-hitter with 9 strikeouts, as the host Cougars claimed the North Suburban Prairie contest.

Megan Meline (2-for-3, double) knocked in a run as part of a 2-run bottom of the sixth. Vernon Hills improved to 8-5 and 3-0 in the NSC Prairie.

Antioch 6, Grant 2: Hannah Skoog, Amber Mysliwiec and Katie Phillips had the visiting Sequoits’ only hits against Bulldogs ace Rachel DePouw, but those were enough in the North Suburban Prairie showdown.

Skoog had 2 RBI, while Mysliwiec finished 1-for-1 with 2 walks and an RBI. Phillips drove in a run, too, and got the win in the circle, striking out six and walking none.

Stolen bases by Paige Gallimore and Taylor Schiltz also contributed to the win. Antioch (7-6, 2-1) led 3-0 after the top of the first inning and put a 3-spot on the board again in the seventh.

DePouw struck out nine in suffering the loss.

Grayslake Central 9, Dundee-Crown 4: Sarah Kuligowski doubled for the Rams, who scored twice in each of the first two innings and led the Fox Valley Conference game 5-1 after three.

“We did not let up on offense, and we ran the bases very aggressively,” Grayslake Central coach Abbey Tadelman said.

Taylor Janda, who notched the win, was charged with 2 earned runs in her 7 innings.

Lake Zurich 2, Zion-Benton 1: Winning pitcher Shannon McPeek was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, and the host Bears got doubles from Carlee Parsons and Mallory Parsons.

Lake Zurich improved to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the North Suburban Lake.

Fremd 8, Mundelein 0: Erin Kennelly and Maria DeVito had the only hits for the visiting Mustangs in the nonconference game.
