LZ wins No. 20

Lake Zurich’s girls basketball team reached the 20-win mark for the first time in three years Tuesday night.

Led by Stephanie Schmid, who scored 20 points, the Bears beat host Grant 70-45 in a North Suburban Conference crossover Tuesday night.

Dori Darras added 16 points (two 3-pointers), and Cathryne Spear had 13, as Lake Zurich (20-9) got its sixth consecutive win and eighth in nine games.

Grant (8-18) was led by Morgan Jahnke, who scored 15 points. Taylor Rossi had 9 on three 3-pointers.

Stevenson 56, North Chicago 36: Katie Batman (four 3-pointers) and Olivia Whalen (two 3s) scored 14 points apiece to lead the visiting Patriots in the North Suburban crossover.

Keeping the game close through the first half, Stevenson sprinted ahead by scoring 36 points in the second half to boost their record to 21-7.

“We played really well the second half,” Patriots coach Tom Dineen said. “It was a good way to finish up the regular season.”

Zion-Benton 60, Antioch 39: Megan Borries scored 10 points, and Brittany Kelly added 8 and to go along with 5 rebounds for the Sequoits (14-13).

Antioch trailed 14-8 after one quarter, but coach Tim Borries said the Zee-Bees’ size was too much. The Sequoits were behind 30-12 at half and never caught up.

Lake Forest 49: Round Lake 29: Adrianna Pitts and Kaylee Parlogean scored 6 points apiece for Round Lake (5-22).

Mary Striedl scored 10 points for Lake Forest. Annie Keller also scored 10 points and had 8 rebounds and 3 steals, as well. Michelle Antonucci added 9 points.

Mundelein 48, Lakes 40: Amanda Davis scored a game-high 17 points for the visiting Mustangs (11-18), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Terese McMahon and Heather Hurlbut each had 13 points for Lakes, which fell to 12-15.

“We did not come out to play,” said coach Pete Schneider, whose Eagles spotted Mundelein a 12-4 lead.

The game was tied 21-21 at halftime and remained close.

“Once we got the defense figured out, we decided to try and ad-lib on the offensive end,” Schneider said. “The kids played hard, as they have all year. Somewhere I let them down by not developing some more basketball awareness. It is not a good time of the year to not be playing better basketball. We have a week to get ready for our regional opener versus Antioch, and we will need to play better.”
