Archdiocese: Susan Geegan of Holy Family Parish in Inverness and Susan Matousek of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish in Mundelein received the Bishop Quarter Award presented by Cardinal Francis George, archbishop of Chicago, during recent ceremonies at Holy Name Cathedral.

Cardinal George also presented 42 Christifideles Awards to 56 Archdiocesan Catholics who reside in Vicariate I.

Church of the Holy Apostles in Wauconda: The church in Wauconda invites all to the Annual Silent and Live Auctions, Dinner and Dance Friday, Nov. 14, at Mill Creek Banquets, 333 W. Mill St. in Wauconda. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The evening will start out with hors d'oeuvres, time to shop the silent auction items, a seven-course, sit-down dinner at 7:30 p.m., followed by a live auction, and dancing until midnight. • "Read the novels and meet the author!" at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, as Maggie Anton, award-winning author of acclaimed novels "Raschi's Daughters" and "Raschi's Daughter - Secret Scholar." Anton will share her journey in writing these tales of 11th-century France, where Jewish scholarship, sensuality and feminism meet. Anton will be available to sign books following her presentation.

• Cooking classes, "Dessert with the Rabbi," will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7. Classes are limited to the first 25 registrants.

Child care with a grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and senior financial consultant Richard Drews of Libertyville is providing "Back to Work," a program where a parent can receive child care at no cost while they go on a job interview and "We Care," a program where a parents can receive child care at no cost while meeting their special medical treatment needs. Celebration! Child care will provide a maximum of five, three-hour child-care sessions so parents may go on a job interview or meet medical needs. Parents need to enroll their child. St Joseph: Men are invited to join a pilgrimage to Italy. Eight places are open for a pilgrimage to Italy Feb. 2-11, 2009. The cost is $3,108 per person, based on double occupancy, and includes travel in Rome, Assisi, Siena and Florence. This package includes nine nights of accommodations, round-trip airfare, daily Mass, breakfast and seven dinners, all entrance fees to the sights and shrines, plus all taxes, surcharges and transfers. St. Lawrence Episcopal Church: On Sunday, Nov. 2, the church continues its celebration by welcoming the Rt. Rev. Jeffrey Lee, bishop from the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago. On that day, St. Lawrence will only have one service at 9 a.m. Bishop Lee will preside over that service. A reception for Bishop Lee will be held immediately following the service.

St. Matthew Lutheran: The church and school introduces the congregation's new "Comfort Dog Ministry." Lutheran Church Charities, a national ministry with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, donated the church's comfort dog, Ladel, in order to promote a unique faith-based approach to working with those affected by various types of trauma, crisis or disaster.

Ministry teams consist of a trained caregiver or givers and a comfort dog. The ministry helps mitigate the emotional and spiritual effects of a crisis or disaster. Petting a dog helps people in pain focus on something outside of themselves, which results in a calmer state of mind. The dog's lower heart rate and blood pressure can improve moods and help reduce anxiety.

The Yocum family of Mundelein, members of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hawthorn Woods, have adopted Ladel, a fully trained, 7-month-old golden retriever comfort dog. Dr. Cox of the All Creatures Animal Hospital in Lake Zurich has donated routine care for Ladel, which includes vaccinations and spaying. A church member has donated the cost for grooming.

Crossview Church: Wildfire, the high school youth group of Crossview Church in Antioch, will sponsor a family-friendly Indoor Maze from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in the church gym, 750 Highview Drive. This is an alternative Halloween activity. More than 3,200 square feet of tunnels, trap doors, slides, platforms, backlights and surprises await all who dare to enter. From 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, the lights will be left on for families with young children. Faith Lutheran: Aidan Dolan, a third-grader at Faith Lutheran School in Antioch, submitted an essay to the American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Essay contest and was chosen as the National and Central division, Class I Americanism Essay Contest Winner for 2008. In his essay, Aidan wrote that his grandfathers were soldiers in World War I, World War II and Korea and how they left their loved ones and fought on foreign lands to place the American flag for freedom. He also wrote that he can show his appreciation for all soldiers, past, present and future, by playing the "Star-Spangled Banner" on his violin. Aidan received $500 and a citation for being the national winner, and for being the Division winner he was awarded $100 and a citation. St. Andrew Episcopal Church: The church at 31 Park Ave., Grayslake, presents its community service project, "Elijah's Mantle for Children in Need." The church's goal is to help families with children in need by supplying free, gently-used clothing for boys and girls in sizes ranging from infant to size 16. The store is open to everyone from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. the second Saturday of each month at no cost. The next store dates are: Saturday, Nov 8; Saturday, Dec. 13; and Saturday, Jan. 10. St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church: The church in Antioch will celebrate a Latin Mass at the regularly scheduled 6 p.m. Vigil Mass Saturday, Nov. 22. The Mass will be said according to the Novus Ordo. The Sunday Vigil Mass is celebrated in Latin, with the exception of the readings and homily, which will be spoken in English. United Methodist Church of Antioch: The church at 848 Main St. houses two preschools. Tomorrow's Future Preschool and Childcare, Inc. offers full-time care to children ages 6 weeks old to elementary-school, with an after-school program.
