Alpine Chapel: Kids through preschool age and their moms are invited to a free Play Day Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, in the Alpine Chapel gym. Kids will get to interact with "Busy Brain" Travelling Children's Museum. Snacks and beverages provided. This event is free and sponsored by Alpine Chapel MOPS, a national organization that provides support and resources for moms of preschoolers.

Among the other events being planned is an opportunity to "Read the novels and meet the author" at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, as Maggie Anton, award-winning author of acclaimed novels, "Raschi's Daughters" and "Raschi's Daughter - Secret Scholar." Anton will share her journey in writing these well-researched tales of 11th century France, where Jewish scholarship, sensuality and feminism meet. Anton will be available to sign books following her presentation.

Childcare with a grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and senior financial consultant, Richard Drews from Libertyville is providing "Back to Work," a program where a parent can receive child care at no cost while they go on a job interview and "We Care," a program where a parents can receive child care at no cost while meeting their special medical treatment needs. Celebration! Childcare will provide a maximum of five, three-hour child care sessions so parents may go on a job interview or to meet medical needs. Parents need to pre-enroll their child. Once the center has the completed paperwork mandated by DCFS, the family may use these services at center.

Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian: The church will hold its annual Fall Kick-Off event Sunday, Sept. 14, immediately following the 9:30 a.m. service. St. Lawrence Episcopal Church: The church will hold its third annual Lobster Boil Saturday, Oct. 4. The 1 1/4 lb lobsters are shipped directly from New England and arrive fresh Saturday morning. You may order your lobsters either live or steamed. Lobsters may be picked up at St. Lawrence at 5, 5:30, 6, 6:30 or 7 p.m. Lobsters must be pre-ordered by Monday, Sept. 29, and the cost is $20 per steamed lobster, $16 per live lobster, by check (in advance) payable to St. Lawrence Episcopal Church.

St. Mary of the Annunciation at Fremont Center: The church in Mundelein is offering a Little Rock Scripture Study course, "St. Paul's Letters from Prison," on Thursdays, Oct. 2 through Jan. 22, with scheduled breaks for the holidays. The sessions will include study of Paul's letters from Philippians, Colossians and Ephesians. The Anglican Chapel of the Holy Cross: The church begins its fifth year at its Lake Villa location with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist on Holy Cross Day at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, followed by a cookout and picnic. There will be activities for all ages as well as an opportunity for each attendee to have a part in the fabrication of a large banner with the Holy Cross as its theme to be hung in the chapel. Faith Lutheran Church: Chris Driesbach, a Christian musician, and Susan Ann, a Christian singer, will appear in a free concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Faith Lutheran Church, 24300 Grass Lake Road, in Antioch. Chris is a member of Crown of Life Church in New Orleans, which was almost destroyed when flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina put 4.5 feet of muddy seawater in the church buildings and the community. The church has been rededicated and 41 neighboring homes have been rebuilt through the efforts of 1,300 volunteers.
The concert features a presentation about Hurricane Katrina and rebuilding of Crown of Life Church. The songs are all original Christian music and tell the story of Crown of Life and Chris' own journey to faith. faithantioch.org or (847) 395-1660.

Grayslake United Protestant Church: The annual Spaghetti Dinner at Grayslake UPC is set for Saturday, Sept. 27. The dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the candlelit fellowship hall of the church, located at 54 S. Whitney St. in downtown Grayslake.
For just $20, a whole family can enjoy a delicious homemade meal that includes spaghetti with a secret-recipe sauce, coleslaw, garlic bread, drinks and desserts. A meatless marinara spaghetti sauce is also available. Single prices for adult meals are $6, seniors are $5, children ages 5-12 are $4 and kids age 4 and under eat free.
The delicious spaghetti sauce will also be available for sale. The dinner is organized by one of the church's fellowship groups, the Friday Knights, who have been making their famous spaghetti for more than 40 years, according to member Barb Fischel.
