Wrap-up: Storm notches 1st UEC win

Trailing Upstate Eight Conference opponent Lake Park 1-0 at the half, South Elgin (4-10, 1-6) rallied back scoring 4 second half goals to win 4-2 and claim its first-ever Upstate Eight Conference boys soccer victory in program history.

Devin Crockett got the Storm on the board unassisted.

It was JV player and spot starter, forward Kevin Gilbert, who then nabbed the hat trick, scoring the next 3 goals with assists coming from Hugo Urrutia, Mike Alfini and James Hollander. Once on top, South Elgin never looked back.

"Kevin has had two starts for us, and after subbing him in for an injury, he was always in the right place at the right time," said Storm coach Mark Neville. "His first goal came off a nice cross, and he couldn't have been happier.

"We've been stressing starting and ending halves strong and tonight our guys took that to the extreme. It was unbelievable."

Luis Abonce was in goal for the Storm and tallied 4 saves.

Boys soccer

Streamwood 1, Larkin 0: Streamwood (10-10-1, 4-3) picked up its second straight tough Upstate Eight Conference match and a third consecutive win with this 1-0 shutout over Larkin.

The Sabres record their third straight shutout with Alex Perez (6 saves) in goal for as many games.

Roma Patino scored the lone goal of the game assisted by Brian Magana.

"Larkin has a nice team," said Streamwood coach Matt Polovin. "They played aggressive and go hard, but I felt that we took them out of their game. We frustrated them."

Raziel Somarriba was in goal for the Royals collecting 5 saves. Larkin missed on a PK and could not convert on opportunities.

"We played hard, but couldn't put the ball into the net," said Larkin coach Ken Hall.

Illiana Christian 2, Westminster Christian 0: Unable to find the back of the net, Westminster Christian (8-8-3, 2-3-1) dropped Game 2 of the Private School League Tournament to Illiana Christian.

Ethan Flickinger had a busy day in the net for the Warriors collecting 24 saves.

McHenry 2, Jacobs 0: Despite a solid second half showing, Jacobs (6-14, 0-9) ended up on the losing end of this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division matchup. Danny Trevor was in goal for the Golden Eagles finishing with 8 saves.

Prairie Ridge 2, Grayslake Central 1: Prairie Ridge (9-9-1, 6-3) remains in the running for the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division title after this win over Grayslake Central. The Wolves trailed 1-0 at the half, but battled back for the win.

Jason Bhatta tied things up early in the second half on a penalty kick, and later assisted Marcelo Jorge with the game-winner.

A.J. Sturm defended the Prairie Ridge net recording 4 saves en route to the win.

Geneva 4, Rochelle 0: Greg Doff blanked the Hubs as the Vikings raised their record to 14-5-2 overall and 5-0 in the Western Sun Conference.

Wheaton Academy 2, Timothy Christian 2 (4-3 PK): The Warriors (9-3-4) won the Private School League semifinal with a shootout win over Timothy. Corey Burke and Tommy Fuller scored in the first half for the Warriors before Justin Groenwald and Jake Schemper scored second-half goals to knot the score. Brooks VanderVeen drilled the game-winning penalty kick into the lower left corner.

Girls volleyball

Hampshire d. Harvard: Hampshire improved to 24-1 overall and 7-1 in Big Northern East with this win over Harvard in two games by scores of 25-12, 25-14.

Jena Karkos (9 kills), Amy Wehrs (8 kills), Jen Kondrat (12 digs), Kara Wehrs (16 assists) and Jaclyn Clai (5 blocks) led the Whip-Pur attack.

"This is the first time we have beaten Harvard on their home court in at least five years so it was a very big win for us," said Hampshire coach Karen Whitehouse.

St. Charles East d. South Elgin: St. Charles East picked up this Upstate Eight conference win over South Elgin in two games (25-19, 25-18). The Storm attack was led by Hayley Bradley (3 kills, 7 digs) and Genevieve Johnson (9 digs). The Saints improved to 16-6 overall and 7-1 in the Upstate Eight. Courtney Sjostrom nailed 7 kills and Laura Homann added 22 assists and 4 digs for St. Charles East.

Huntley d. Grayslake North: With key play from Toni Jaehnig (5 kills, 8 digs), Amanda Carroll (18 assists), Allyson Stellmach (18 points) and Krissy Bergquist (13 kills), Huntley (9-12, 1-5) earned its first Fox Valley Conference Fox Division win of the season.

The Red Raiders took locked in the win in two games by scores of 25-11 and 25-14.

Burlington Central d. Marengo: A balanced offensive attack helped Burlington Central (19-3, 7-0) to this Big Northern East win in two games (25-14, 25-15). Leading the way for the Rockets were Stephanie Holthus (9 kills), Rachael Latham (4 kills), Teresa Krog (7 kills), Kim Ingraham (5 kills), Molly Turk (22 assists), Brooke Porto (5 digs) and Brittany Priest (5 digs).

Dundee-Crown d. McHenry: By scores of 25-22, 25-11, Dundee-Crown (16-5, 4-2) walked away with this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win over McHenry.

The Charger attack was led by Amanda Lutzow (8 kills, 7 digs), Stephanie Thorson (5 kills) and Kathleen Collingbourne (15 digs).

CL Central d. Prairie Ridge: Despite solid efforts from Ashley Doherty (8 kills) and Jessica Thompson (12 digs), Prairie Ridge dropped this Fox Valley Conference Fox Division contest in two games (25-11, 25-21).

"Central played very well," said Wolves coach Stefanie Otto. "The end was exciting. Our girls fought and battled through from start to finish."

Cary-Grove d. Jacobs: Jacobs (9-12, 1-5) put up a good fight, but in the end Cary-Grove walked away with this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division victory in three games. The Trojans dropped Game 1 by a score of 24-26 before going on to take the final two (25-17, 25-19.

Kelly Lamberti (12 kills, 4 aces, 3 blocks), Erin Wahl (20 digs) and Jamie Kuhl (6 blocks) led the way for Cary-Grove (20-6, 4-2).

"These were some of our best matches yet," said C-G coach Patty Langanis. "We played very well as a team."

Lauren Pigatto led the Golden Eagles with 14 kills, 6 blocks and 8 digs. Erica Liss (27 assists, 7 digs), Brittney Mascola (26 digs), Carlie Schwabe (11 digs), Amy Cavanaugh (6 kills, 6 digs, ace) and Stacie Weinert (6 kills, 6 digs) contributed.

CL South d. Woodstock: Led by Morgan Killberger (8 kills) and Jordan Guida (18 assists), Crystal Lake South (14-7, 6-0) remains unbeaten in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play after this 25-19, 25-21 win.

Bartlett d. Larkin: Bartlett took this Upstate Eight Conference meeting via a 25-19, 25-16 win in two games. Kelli Johnson (3 kills, dig) and Natalie Beaver (3 kills, block) led the Larkin attack.

Geneva d. Yorkville:ŒLauren Wicinski pounded 9 kills and Kelsey Augustine added 7 in the Vikings' 25-15, 25-15 road victory. Betsey York and Jenny Pokorny combined for 18 points and 4 aces, and Pokorny set 24 assists. Geneva is 17-4 overall, 9-1 in the Western Sun heading into the St. Charles East tournament this weekend at the Great Lakes Center.

Football

Aurora Christian:ŒSaturday's Private School League game between Aurora Christian and Walther Lutheran will take place at 1 p.m. at Marmion, not at East Aurora where Aurora Christian's home games have been this year.

Men's soccer

Waubonsee 4, McHenry 2: Ricardo Perez and James Heidorn each scored twice for the Chiefs.

ECC 3, College of Lake County 3: With goals from Armando Estrada, Stewart Sogge and Angel Gasca, Elgin Community College (2-7-2) walked away from this ISCC match with a 3-3 tie. Gasca, Pat Parsons and Ilya Mohedano added assists.

In goal for the Spartans, Jose Colin racked up 4 saves.
