New pastor: Lord of Glory Lutheran Church in Grayslake has installed the Rev. Brian Davies as pastor. Davies is a 2002 graduate of Concordia University, River Forest, Ill. Davies is also a 2006 graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo., having served his year of Vicarage (internship) at Woodbury Lutheran Church in Woodbury, Minn. His first call was to St. Peter Lutheran Church and School in Macomb, Mich., as associate pastor of outreach.

Oct. 9

Shabbat & Simchat Torah: Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield, will celebrate the holidays of Shabbat and Simchat Torah beginning with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, followed by a service at 8 p.m. featuring members of the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band and the unrolling of the entire Torah scroll. Cost of dinner is $8 per adult, $6 per child ages 4 to 12 or $18 per household. Cost includes a donation to MAZON: The Jewish Response to Hunger. RSVP with payment to the temple office. Holy Play: Church Women United of the Barrington area invites all women for a Whole Day of Holy Play from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Techny Towers, Northbrook. www.technytowers.org. Based on the biblical story of Queen Esther, we will explore how we, as women of God, may play, be pampered, love our sisters and serve our God by serving others. Lobster Boil: St. Lawrence Episcopal Church will hold its fourth annual Lobster Boil Saturday, Oct. 10. The 11/4 lb lobsters are shipped directly from New England and arrive fresh that day. Lobsters may be ordered live or steamed and picked up at the church at 5, 5:30, 6, 6:30 or 7 p.m. Cost is $20 per lobster, payable by check in advance (deadline Oct. 5). All proceeds benefit St. Lawrence Church and their outreach ministries.

Clothes for the needy: Clothing in sizes ranging from infant to 16 boys and girls is available the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Episcopal Church's Elijah's Mantle for Children in Need community service project, 31 Park Ave., Grayslake. Next dates are: Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. There is no cost. Donations of gently used children's clothing in good condition are always welcome. Book fair: Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield, will host a Book Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11. The fair will feature a variety of books for all ages, as well as CDs, cassettes and song books. Pickup date will be Sunday, Dec. 6, at the temple. Rabbi's Reading Table: Rabbi Paul Cohen will start off this year's series of Rabbi's Reading Table discussions with the best-selling novel "Sarah's Key" by Tatiana de Rosnay at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. The book revolves around Vel' d' Hiv' (Operation Spring Breeze), the French-led roundup of more than 13,000 Parisian Jews in 1942 and the tragic impact this event has on a 10-year-old Jewish girl. Adult classes: The first adult offering of this school year will be Oct. 15 at Congregation Or Shalom, 21 Hawthorn Parkway in Vernon Hills. The program, "Bagels and Bible," will be led by Rabbi Scott Looper. This is a Thursday morning discussion of Torah, current events and other issues of interest. Programs in this series also will be held Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. Stressful time: The United Protestant Church (UPC) of Grayslake will present a workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, called "Regaining Focus in Stressful Times." This workshop will integrate the realities of daily life and the fullness of faith, while helping participants regain focus, deepen their faith, identify their strengths and apply the insights to self, church and community. This workshop will be led by the Rev. William H. Tweedley, a certified life coach who works with spiritual individuals and organizations. Tweedley is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, serving as a hospital chaplain at Advocate Healthcare's Good Samaritan Hospital's Critical Care Unit in Downers Grove. Benefit concert: ElderCARE@ChristChurch's Benefit Concert, "Music that Refreshes the Soul," will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Christ Church, 410 Grand Ave., Waukegan. The concert celebrates ElderCARE's 11 years and more than 105,000 volunteer hours of service to homebound elders living in northern Lake County. This volunteer group distributes donations of dog and cat food, domestic bird food, treats, cat litter and other items to people who are trying to keep their pets in a struggling economy. Revival: Do your soul and spirit need uplifting? The Rev. Meals for the starving: Holy Cross Lutheran Church is coordinating an effort of more than 5,000 community members of all ages to package one million life-saving meals for starving children around the world during an event Dec. 4-6 at the new Lake County Fairgrounds in Grayslake. Through a partnership of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and Minnesota-based Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), volunteers will package specially-designed meals that provide the key nutrients a starving child needs to survive and thrive. FMSC will distribute these meals to orphanages, clinics, relief centers and schools in more than 60 countries in the developing world. Holy Cross Lutheran Church is seeking volunteers to help at this event. Two-hour packing sessions, each beginning with a brief orientation and overview of FMSC's work around the world, will take place at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, with the last day's session beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Recycling: On the third Sunday of each month, youth will man the recycle bin between services from 9:30 to 10 a.m. and after 11 a.m. Bring your old newspapers, junk mail and catalogs. Youth will be ready to assist with the unloading of your car as you drive up to the bin in the Grace parking lot. The recycle bin is in place on a daily basis. A portion of the cash credits for all paper donations will be used toward a green gift for the community.
