Lake Co. 50-plus calendar

Events that specify they are for those who are over age 50, including trips, classes, support programs, fitness and lectures. Deadline is two weeks before event date.

Oct. 12

Scholar-in-Residence: 12:30 p.m. Mondays, Patty Turner Senior Center, 375 Elm St., Deerfield. Barry Bradford leads an array of educational programs focused on history, psychology, theater and books. Arthritis exercise program: 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, and Friday, Oct. 16, Lake Barrington Shores Recreation Center. Designed for people with arthritis, the program emphasizes relaxation and joint-protection techniques. $4 per session in advance; $5 per session drop in. Oct. 15

The Deerfield Hummers and Strummers: 2-2:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2900 N. Main St., Buffalo Grove. Vernon Township's Senior Citizen group, the Prime Timers, will present The Deerfield Hummers and Strummers performing on ukulele and harmonica. Spelling Bee for Seniors: 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, Barton Senior Residences of Zion, 3500 Sheridan Road, Zion. Seniors ages 65 and up are invited to participate in the Senior Spelling Bee. Cash prizes will be awarded, including a $250 prize for first place. A complimentary lunch and private tours of the Barton facility will be held for those interested after the competition. Vascular Health Screening: 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, then by appointment Thursday, Nov. 19, Lake Forest Hospital Specialty Care Center, 660 N. Westmoreland Road, Lake Forest. For adults over 60, or those over 50 with vascular risk factors. The two-night event focuses on the education and prevention of circulatory system problems. The first night features an educational dinner seminar. Attendees return the second night at an assigned time for their screening and a meeting with a vascular physician. $40 for the two-night event.
