New pastor: The Rev. Rod Matthew Krueger was installed as the new pastor at St. John Lutheran Church in Island Lake. The Service of Installation took place Aug. 23. The Rev. Aaron Witt, who has served St. John as vacancy pastor, led the service. The Rev. Ray Krueger, who is Rod's father, presented the sermon message, and the Rev. William Stroup officiated during the Rite of Installation. Krueger replaces the Rev. Bruce Hoffmann, who retired in May after serving St. John for 37 years. Sunday worship service is at 9 a.m., and Sunday school and Bible class are at 10:30 a.m. St. John Lutheran Church is at 405 W. State Road 176 in Island Lake.

Shabbat and Sukkot: Celebrate the holidays of Shabbat and Sukkot at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, with a Tot Shabbat Service for preschoolers and their families, followed at 6:50 p.m. by the temple's traditional "Pizza in the Hut" dinner, accompanied by sukkah decorating, singing and waving of the lulav. The cost of dinner is $8 for adults, $6 for children ages 4 to 12 and $18 per household. Cost includes a donation to MAZON: The Jewish Response to Hunger. Rummage sale: The annual Community Garage Sale at Community Christian Church will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Bargain hunters will find clothing, sports equipment, books, and toys for kids of all ages. Blessing of the Animals: St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church will have a Blessing of Animals Saturday, Oct. 3, on the church grounds, located on vintage farm property in eastern Antioch. The service will begin at 10 a.m. Owners of all kinds of animals, from pets to farm livestock, are asked to bring their creatures on a leash or in a trailer, cage or container for the service. Anointing of the Sick: St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church has a special Sunday Mass with the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, at the church. Anyone who is sick or elderly is invited to receive the sacrament. People who wish to attend the Mass and are not registered parishioners at St. Raphael should call the parish office to RSVP for the Anointing. Temple moving: Big changes are taking place at Congregation Or Shalom as the temple prepares for its official move into its new home, adjacent to its longtime building, 21 Hawthorn Parkway in Vernon Hills. While religious classes will commence in the new building in September, a community open house for the new building will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, Oct. 4.

Pulse of Our World: Rabbi Paul Cohen discusses current events, pulled from the headlines, and the appropriate Jewish response at "Pulse of Our World: Our Rabbi Reads the Headlines," taking place at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. This informal, interactive program looks at the news issues of the day from a Jewish perspective.

Animal Blessing: St. Lawrence Episcopal Church, 125 W. Church St., Libertyville, will have an Animal Blessing Day at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4. There will be a special liturgy and blessing, a pet treat bake sale, giveaways for the pets and education booths provided by local pet adoption agencies. Church Street will be blocked off for the festivities. There will also be a collection of new or gently used stuffed animals to be donated to needy children. Holy Play: Church Women United of the Barrington area invites all women for a Whole Day of Holy Play from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Techny Towers, Northbrook. www.technytowers.org. Clothes for the needy: Clothing in sizes ranging from infant to 16 boys and girls is available the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Episcopal Church's Elijah's Mantle for Children in Need community service project, 31 Park Ave., Grayslake. Book fair: Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield, will host a Book Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11. The fair will feature a variety of books for all ages, as well as CDs, cassettes and song books. Pickup date will be Sunday, Dec. 6, at the temple. Rabbi's Reading Table: Rabbi Paul Cohen will start off this year's series of Rabbi's Reading Table discussions with the best-selling novel "Sarah's Key" by Tatiana de Rosnay at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. The book revolves around Vel' d' Hiv' (Operation Spring Breeze), the French-led roundup of more than 13,000 Parisian Jews in 1942 and the tragic impact this event has on a 10-year-old Jewish girl. Adult classes: The first adult offering of this school year will be Oct. 15 at Congregation Or Shalom, 21 Hawthorn Parkway in Vernon Hills. The program, "Bagels and Bible," will be led by Rabbi Scott Looper. This is a Thursday morning discussion of Torah, current events and other issues of interest. Programs in this series also will be held Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. Hebrew classes: Learn or brush up on your Hebrew skills this year at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road, Northfield. The temple offers three levels of Adult Hebrew Sundays, beginning Oct. 4. The classes run concurrently with Religious School. Perfect for the novice, Beginning Prayerbook Hebrew covers the Aleph-Bet through prayer reading and is from 9 to 9:55 a.m. Intermediate Prayerbook Hebrew, offered from 10 to 10:55 a.m., will help you master your prayer book and Torah reading skills and gain a greater understanding of worship services. Conversational Hebrew from 11 to 11:55 a.m. will set you on your way to speaking modern-day Hebrew. Basic Hebrew reading skills are required for both the Intermediate Hebrew and Conversational Hebrew classes. Recycling: On the third Sunday of each month, youth will man the recycle bin between services from 9:30 to 10 a.m. and after 11 a.m. Bring your old newspapers, junk mail and catalogs. Youth will be ready to assist with the unloading of your car as you drive up to the bin in the Grace parking lot. The recycle bin is in place on a daily basis. A portion of the cash credits for all paper donations will be used toward a green gift for the community.
