Lake Co. public service calendar

Calls for volunteers and events that benefit the public, such as social service clubs, call for donations of items, blood drives, bone marrow drives, food pantry drives, food giveaways, etc. Deadline is two weeks before event date.

Sept. 30

Dist. 127 Special Education meeting: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, Westlake Christian Academy, 275 S. Lake Street, Grayslake. Grayslake Community High School District 127 will conduct a meeting to discuss the district's plans for providing special education services to students who attend private schools and home schools. Teen Stitch and Share: 4-6 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 1, Nov. 5 and Dec. 3, Ela Area Public Library, 275 Mohawk Trail, Lake Zurich. For all levels of knitters ages 11 and older. ADHD Out Loud: 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, Libertyville Sports Complex, 1950 N. Highway 45, Libertyville. Dr. Michael Greenbaum will answer questions and discuss treatments, new research, and concerns about attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. This event is free, and open to the public. Oct. 3

Ride for Refugees: 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, Alpine Chapel, 23153 W. Miller Road, Lake Zurich. Bicyclists will mount up for rides of 5, 15, 30, 45 or 60 miles to raise money on behalf of the world's 21 million refugees. Area residents can register to ride, lead a team, donate or volunteer. Palatine Amateur Football Association food drive: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, Community Park, 301 E. Wood St., and and at Ost Field, 250 E. Wood St., Palatine. Help stock the Palatine Township Food Pantry during homecoming. Donation boxes will be available by the baseball field backstops at Community Park and between the bleachers and concession stand at Ost Park.

Oct. 7

District 120 special education meeting: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, Mundelein High School, 1350 W. Hawley St., Mundelein. A meeting to discuss the Mundelein High School District 120 plans for providing special education services to students with disabilities who attend private schools and home schools within the district for the 2009-10 school year. Parents of home-schooled children with a disability who reside within the boundaries of District 120 are urged to attend the meeting. Oct. 10

Clothes for the needy: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. the second Saturday of each month, St. Andrew Episcopal Church's Elijah's Mantle for Children in Need community service project, 31 Park Ave., Grayslake. Clothing in sizes ranging from infant to 16 boys and girls is available. Next dates are: Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12. There is no cost. Food drive: The Barrington Ministerial Alliance has set its sights on gathering 50,000 pounds of food to be distributed through the Northern Illinois Food Bank to food pantries in Cuba, Barrington, and Ela townships as well as Carpentersville and Palatine. The food drive will culminate in early October. Join all 13 BAMA churches to help reach the goal.

Artists sought: The Hawthorn District 73 PTO is looking for unique artists to participate in their Winter Boutique, Saturday, Dec. 5. Business/Craft Expo: The Mundelein Park District is looking for exhibitors for its Business and Craft Expo to be held 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Mundelein Community Center, 1401 N. Midlothian Road, Mundelein. Exhibit cost is $40, and includes an 8-foot table, tablecloth, business sign, and electricity if needed. Admission to the expo will be free to the public. Tree and bench donations: The Vernon Hills Park District offers residents and neighbors the opportunity to honor a special person or commemorate an event by donating a tree or bench in a district park. Trees range from $225-$475 depending on the species selected, and can be personalized with a bronze plaque, which is sold at cost. Benches may be purchased for donation at a cost of $700, and personalized with a bronze plaque. Prices for plaques start at $70. Pooch Pantry: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Lake County Animal Control, 29278 N. Highway 83, Mundelein. Accepting donations of dry and canned dog and cat food, treats and domestic bird food; gift cards for PetSmart, Petco, and Pet Supplies Plus; cat litter; resealable plastic bags; and pet welfare goods such as bowls and toys. Eli Skinner Chapter, NSDAR: The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is seeking volunteers to make wool caps for the troops stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and South Korea. Wool head covering which can be worn under the Kevlar helmet provides warmth to the head and neck, but does not restrict vision. Patterns are available at www.geocities.com/helmetliner. Electronics recycling: 8 a.m. to noon, the first Saturday of each month, Wauconda Township Highway Department, at 505 W. Bonner Road, Wauconda. All Wauconda Township residents are invited to bring in electronic recyclables. Items accepted include computers and computer components, video games, televisions, VCR/DVD players, cameras, radios and accessories, phones, and more. Allendale Association: A not-for-profit children's facility in Lake Villa, looking for qualified volunteers to work directly with children or on other projects. Help a child develop positive relationships with adults, share gardening knowledge in the vocational horticultural center, evaluate a student's Individual Education Plans and meet with the child's therapeutic team, work in the thrift store, or help in other ways. Paper drive: 9:30-10 a.m. and 11 a.m. the third Sunday of each month, Grace Lutheran Church, 501 Valley Park Drive, Libertyville. Church youth will man the church recycling bin to assist with the unloading of cars. The bin is in place every day.
