McHenry County College launches new faculty speaker series Oct. 17

McHenry County College has announced a new speaker series called "Experts and Insights," featuring MCC faculty members. The series is an opportunity for the community to experience firsthand the high quality of education and expertise provided by MCC's faculty as they present topics in their fields of study.

The series kicks off at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, with "Dragonflies and Damselflies: A Natural History," by MCC faculty member Marla Garrison.

Attendees will experience an image-intensive, up close and personal presentation of the insect order Odonata, a visually splendid, group of insects with ancestors dating back more than 300 million years to a time when dragonfly-like creatures with 2½-foot wingspans ruled the air.

She also will discuss the 100-plus species known from Illinois, which can be excellent wetland indicators. Through macro and micro photography, she will present the captivating Lilliputian world of local dragonfly and damselfly fauna including their anatomy, life history, behaviors and diversity.

Upcoming topics in the "Experts and Insights" series include: "Marshall Fields and Chicago"; "Let's Talk About Sex"; "Leadership, Communication, and the Recipe for Success"; "Get Happy! What Psychology Can Tell Us About Happiness"; and "Wise and Well: A Healthy Balance."

All sessions begin at 6 p.m. in the Luecht Auditorium at McHenry County College, 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake.

Light refreshments and appetizers will be provided prior to each talk. The sessions are free and open to the public. For information on all upcoming presentations and presenting faculty, visit www.mchenry.edu/experts.

This event series is generously supported by the Friends of MCC Foundation.
