Senior Helpers Points Out How to Know Something Isn't Right

Chances are if you feel something's not right with your loved one, most likely, he or she needs help. "Unfortunately, many seniors are embarrassed to let a relative know there is something wrong in their home," said Operations Manager Robert Bicanic of the Northbrook-based Senior Helpers office serving the north and northwest suburbs. "Seniors will try to cover up the problem."

Of course, it's human to feel lazy and let the dishes stay in the sink for a while. However, when you see a few days worth of dishes in the sink, there has to be a reason your parent says he or she will take care of it --but doesn't.

"It's important to look for the reasons that your loved one may need a caregiver. Here are eight signs to know that something isn't right, and your mom or dad can't manage on their own anymore.

• Frequent falls and stumbles or bruising on their body

• Struggling to stand from a seated position

• Dirtier-than-normal home

This is an important sign especially of their home was always neat and spotless

• Wearing the same clothes multiple days in a row

• Unopened or unorganized mail

• Difficulty walking short distance

• Changes in mood or personality

• An odor throughout the home
