Photographer Deborah Orloff to be next guest for ECC Speaker Series Nov. 8

University of Toledo professor Deborah Orloff will speak as part of the Elgin Community College Humanities Center Speaker Series on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Her lecture and presentation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Building G Spartan Auditorium, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. The event is free and open to the public.

Orloff is a photographic artist, professor of art and associate chair of the Department of Art at the University of Toledo. She currently teaches all levels of photographic art at UT's Center for Visual Arts and has been a professional artist for over 20 years.

Originally from New York City, Orloff received her master's in photography from Syracuse University and her bachelor's from Clark University. Although her primary medium is photography, she has also worked in video and installation.

Orloff's artwork has been included in numerous exhibitions at national and international venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; the Toyohashi Museum of Art and History in Toyohashi, Japan; EAFIT University in Medellin, Colombia; and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, Scotland.

A portfolio of photographs from her new series, "Elusive Memory," was selected by Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Photography for inclusion in their collection as part of the Midwest Photographers Project. Orloff has been the recipient of dozens of grants and awards, including corporate sponsorship by Hahnemühle Paper in Germany, and regularly gives public lectures about her photo-based art.

Work from her "Elusive Memory" series will be on exhibited in Safety-Kleen Gallery One in the Building H Arts Center from Monday, Nov. 7 to Wednesday, Dec. 14.

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery.
