CLC Trustee Barbara D. Oilschlager wins statewide award

Barbara D. Oilschlager of Vernon Hills, who has served on the CLC Board of Trustees since 1989, has been awarded the 2015 Ray Hartstein Trustee Achievement Award by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association.

ICCTA is an organization engaged in legislative advocacy and professional development for community college boards in Illinois. The Hartstein award recognizes exemplary service by a currently serving Illinois community college trustee. Oilschlager received the award at ICCTA's annual convention held June 5-6 in Schaumburg.

"I am very honored to receive the Hartstein award, which I believe recognizes more than just one individual's work," Oilschlager said. "ICCTA brings together people from around the state working to advance community colleges. Our work is another example of how ordinary people working together with common purpose can achieve extraordinary results."

"This is the second year in a row that a CLC trustee has been honored with the Hartstein award, and these honors reflect the CLC board's commitment to being involved statewide in working for community colleges," said Board Chairman Dr. William M. Griffin. Trustee Richard Anderson, who currently serves as the board's secretary, received the Hartstein award last year along with Trustee Jody Wadhwa of Oakton Community College.

Oilschlager has served continuously on the CLC board since 1989. During her tenure as trustee, she has served several times as chairman and vice chairman and has provided leadership on various board committees. Retired as an administrator for secondary vocational education programs for the Lake County Area Vocational System, Lake County High Schools Technology Campus, she holds a Bachelor of Behavioral Science degree from National Louis University and a Master of Educational Administration degree from the University of Illinois.

Active on the state level, Oilschlager served as president of the Illinois Community College Trustees Association from 2009-10. In 2012, she received the Excellence in Service to Education and Illinois Community Colleges award in recognition of her leadership and service to education in Lake County and the Illinois community college system. In addition to receiving this year's Hartstein award, she also this year received her fourth Trustee Education Award from ICCTA.

Also active on the national level, Oilschlager has made presentations at meetings of the American Association of Community Colleges (ACCT) and the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). She has served on the nominating, public policy, governing/bylaws and communication committees for ACCT and currently serves as the ACCT state coordinator for Illinois.

Oilschlager is a member of the governor's Illinois Workforce Investment Board and past co-chair of the State of Illinois Education-to-Careers Steering Committee.
