Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Pay it Forward
Last month, Pi Beta Phi Glen Ellyn/Wheaton Alumnae Club donated 500 books to the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP). The club applied for a donation of books with the intent to donate to HSP from First Book, an organization that has provided over a 100 million new books to schools and programs that serve children in need within the U.S. and Canada for service organizations. First Book awarded Pi Beta Phi with the 500 books, which they donated to HSP, the pre-selected non-profit organization.
Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club of Glen Ellyn and Wheaton was founded in 1955 as the first women's service sorority. The club has focused their philanthropic efforts on removing the barrier of illiteracy locally. They work with the Metropolitan Family Services Outreach Center, and recently donated copies of Green Eggs and Ham to all the children at the Wheaton Headstart location and participated in games and reading stories. Pi Beta Phi has previously supported HSP's efforts to provide poverty relief to children and seniors in DuPage and Kane Counties, and HSP is grateful for the club's efforts. With their donation, HSP can provide the needy children enrolled in its programs with books to improve reading skills and build self-esteem.
Children will receive these books through the Children's Birthday Project (CBP). There are 925 children in this program that HSP needs to collect approximately 6,000 books to provide for CBP annually. A child apart of the program will receive a birthday box of gifts which include 5-7 new books, 6-10 new toys, a game or activity, plush animals, school supplies, and smaller items such as bubbles, yo-yo's or card games. After toys are selected for the individual child, they are wrapped and included in the box is a "Party-in-a-Bag" which contains various party essentials such as cake mix, frosting, party favors and more to celebrate their special day.

About The Humanitarian Service Project
HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 840 families with 1,600 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, bread, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries of 100 pounds including fresh produce, frozen meats, bread, non-perishables, paper products and secret pal gifts to 123 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 925 children. Feed the Kids program provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce worth $1,500 retail in total for the summer. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
