Bartlett’s clutch hit lifts Lakes

Lakes’ baseball team won a thriller Wednesday.

Mike Bartlett’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Eagles to a 12-11 win over Grant in North Suburban Conference Prairie Division play.

The win upped Lakes’ record to 10-14 overall and 6-4 in the NSC Prairie. Grant fell to 14-9 overall.

With game tied 11-11 in the bottom of the seventh, junior Justin Corona led off with a pinch-hit single to center field. Senior Adam Vassios followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Corona to second. After a balk advanced Corona to third, Bartlett drilled the game-winning single down the third-base line to score Corona.

Bartlett (2-for-4, run, sacrifice) and sophomore Billy Morris (2-for-3, 4 RBI) led the way offensively for Lakes, while another sophomore, Chase Slota picked up his first varsity win.

Carmel 5, Lake Park 1: Tyler Murphy doubled and tripled, as the Corsairs improved to 19-4 with the nonconference win.

Wauconda 2, Cary-Grove 1: Luke Kenny was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, as James Holub struck out 10 in a complete-game effort for the Bulldogs in the nonconference game.

Austin Swenson was 2-for-2 for Wauconda (14-5).

Lake Forest 10, Libertyville 5: The Scouts stunned the Wildcats, who got doubles from Matt Vogt, Jimmy Govern and Matt Reed. Vogt and Govern had 2 RBI apiece.

Peter Gruenes homered for Lake Forest in the North Suburban Lake game.

Mundelein 8, Zion-Benton 1: Will Farmer and Ryan Dolan each hit 3-run homers for the host Mustangs in the North Suburban Lake contest.

Spencer Ryan was the winning pitcher. Farmer and Dolan each finished 2-for-3 for Mundelein (23-2, 9-1).

Vernon Hills 11, Antioch 1: A day after getting beat by the mercy rule, the Cougars responded in the North Suburban Prairie rematch.

Pat Crowley set the tone for Vernon Hills on the mound providing his best outing of the year, coach Jay Czarnecki said.

Crowley held Antioch to 1 run on 5 hits, striking out five. The Cougars gave him more than enough offensive support, scoring nine runs in their first three at-bats. Jordan Freibrun (2-for-3, run, 2 RBI), Tyler Feece (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Crowley (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Tommy Earhart (2-for-3, 3 runs, 2 RBI) led the way. Connor Dickman also was a key contributor, drawing 3 walks and scoring 2 runs.

Nick Muskat had the only RBI for Antioch (15-10, 7-3).
