World Health Day

World Health Day, established by the World Health Organization or WHO, is celebrated on April 7 each year. This time is devoted to bring worldwide attention about the importance of health. World Health Day is acknowledged by multiple organizations throughout the world.

Although many different general topics are covered, each year brings a one specific health related topic to light. This year's focus is high blood pressure. High blood pressure, which is also known as hypertension, affects 1 in 3 adults worldwide. High blood pressure increases ones risks for heart attack, strokes, and kidney failure. High blood pressure is both preventable and treatable. This year World Health Day is taking a stand on informing people all around the world.

From April 7-11, thousands of cities open up public spaces in order to support and spread awareness of World Health Day. Many organizations take charge and host events to help raise awareness in a fun and unique way.

There are four health related issues that World Health Day focuses on each year:

• Noncommunicable diseases due to unhealthy lifestyles

• Communicable diseases due to overcrowding

• Increased risks of accidents or violence

• Exposure to air pollution

The ultimate goal of World Health Day this year is to lower the large number of heart attacks and strokes every year. By informing other people throughout the world about health related issues there can be a higher understanding and more people can take action in order to help prevent diseases.

World Health Day Organizations will:

• inform adults about the causes and consequences of high blood pressure

• provide information on how to prevent hypertension

• encourage adults to be aware of their own blood pressure

• provoke national and local authorities to form better environments for healthy behaviors
