School Supply Help for Needy Kids

Last week, St. Francis High School in Wheaton donated a bus full of new school supplies to the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) of Carol Stream. The supplies were collected through a school-wide drive organized by St. Francis’ student government. HSP will distribute the supplies to the needy children served by the non-profit’s Children’s Birthday Project, which provides 875 needy children from ages 3-11 in DuPage and Kane Counties with a 20-25 lb package of 4-10 new toys, 5-7 new books, school supplies, and party supplies on their birthdays.

In addition to running the school supply drive, the student government at St. Francis also donated the proceeds of the school’s Homecoming Dance ticket sales, a total of $1000, to HSP. Kristina Lipskis, a math teacher and the moderator of the Student Government Executive Board at St. Francis, said the students felt it was important to donate both the school supplies and money to HSP, in order to equip HSP to fulfill the diverse needs of the impoverished families they serve.

HSP includes school supplies in the “birthday boxes” of all the school aged children in their Children’s Birthday Project, to ensure that all needy children have the materials necessary to succeed in school. HSP also reached hundreds more needy children with school supplies this summer through their school supply initiative. Through the initiative, HSP provided three full cargo vans of school supplies to the DuPage County Back to School fair, and sent another three vans full directly to four needy elementary schools in Aurora and one in Addison.
