Mandel’s gem lifts Mundelein past Warren

Mundelein’s baseball team kept rolling, and so did Jared Mandel.

The senior left-hander fired a complete-game 2-hitter over 5 innings, as the Mustangs blanked visiting Warren 10-0 on Tuesday to improve to 17-2 and 5-0 in the North Suburban Lake Division

Mandel, who hiked his record to 5-1, struck out six.

The Mustangs got doubles from Jordan Wiegold, Chris Maranto and Will Farmer. Wiegold and Farmer each had 2 hits. Maranto, Farmer and Torr Randau knocked in a pair of runs apiece.

Anthony Garza had a double for Warren (8-6).

Libertyville 4, Lake Zurich 2: Kyle Cibrario went the distance on the mound for the host Wildcats, striking out five and allowing 4 hits in the North Suburban Lake contest.

Alex Semersky doubled for Libertyville (11-4, 3-0).

Purdue-bound Mike Lutz was the tough-luck loser, as he allowed only 1 earned run over 6 innings, striking out eight. Lake Zurich (11-7, 2-3) committed 6 errors.

Tanner Kiser cranked a 2-run homer in the sixth to cut the Bears’ deficit in half. Jacob LaRue (2-for-2, walk) was aboard.

Wauconda 11, Round Lake 1: Tony Kaminsky was 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI, and Jake Ziolkowski had a triple and 3 RBI for the visiting Bulldogs in the North Suburban Prairie game.

Shawn Sundquist pitched a six-inning complete game, striking out four and scattering 3 hits.

Wauconda (9-6) also got doubles from David Diol (2-for-3, RBI) and John Kamakis.

Vernon Hills 12, North Chicago 0: Pat Quinn, Brett Peterson, Eric Lang, Dylan McNamara, Jake Boyer and Ethan McGrew all contributed offensively for the Cougars in the North Suburban Prairie game.

Stevenson 6, Prospect 2: Steve Galanopoulos was 3-for-4, and Jon Savarise pitched all 7 innings, striking out nine and allowing 4 hits, as the visiting Patriots captured the nonconference game.

Jack Karras had a double for Stevenson (10-5).

Grayslake Central 1, Prairie Ridge 0: Mark Ash tossed a 2-hitter with 12 strikeouts, as the host Rams won a tightly contested Fox Valley Conference game.

Grayslake Central’s fifth win a row hiked the Rams’ record to 12-5 and 5-1 in the FVC.

“Mark put us on his back today,” Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen said. “He had all his pitches working against an aggressive-swinging PR team.”

The Rams scored the game’s only run off Wolves pitcher Tyler Tennant in the first, as leadoff man Nick Hosford singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Rams had only one more hit — a double by Sean Boban — the rest of the game.

“Their guy was tough and I told Mark after the first inning that he needed the 1 run to stand up, and he made good on it,” Whalen said. “It was a lot of fun to watch those two guys pitch. Typical FVC game that could have gone either way.”

Grayslake North 3, Huntley 2: Nick Carmody had 2 doubles and 2 RBI for the host Knight in the Fox Valley Conference game.

C.J. Bailey earned the win with a complete-game performance, striking out four, walking three and allowing 5 hits. One of the runs he yielded was unearned.
