Antioch brings home a pair of victories

Antioch’s baseball team earned a hard-fought, out-of-state doubleheader sweep Saturday.

The Sequoits won a pair of closes ones over host Westosha Central (Wis.), 5-3 in the opener and 4-3 in the second game, to improve to 9-3.

Dan Arden went the distance on the mound in Game 1 for Antioch, striking out 10 in improving to 3-2. Adam Harvey (2-for-3), Adam Warner (2-for-4) and sophomore Jerry LaSaint (triple) paced the offense.

Warner was 3-for-3 in Game 2, while Matt DeJong went 2-for-3. LaSaint earned his first varsity win, pitching all 7 innings and striking out five.

Vernon Hills 18, Elmwood Park 6: A day after struggling to get a big hit, the Cougars put up 18 runs on 17 hits.

Ethan McGrew (2-for-5, 2 runs, RBI) set the tempo, as he doubled off the left-field fence to start the game. The hits continued from there as eight different Vernon Hills players hit safely.

Pat Crowley led the way, going 4-for-4 with 3 doubles, a triple and 6 RBI. Austin Hagen (3-for-4, double, 3 runs, 3 RBI), MJ Crowley (2-for-4, run), Tyler Feece (2-for-2, double, 3 runs, RBI) and Jake Boyer (2-for-2, run, 2 RBI) all had multihit games.

Steve Nelson and Chris Marras (double, run, RBI) both hit safely as well. Nelson earned the win, as he allowed 5 runs on 6 hits while striking out four over 4 innings.

Stevenson 6, Deerfield 4: Freshman Will Bourbon went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, and Illinois-bound Adam Walton was 2-for-4 as well for the visiting Patriots in the nonconference game.

Stevenson (9-5) got doubles from Tony Heiser, Zach Novoselsky, Emory-bound Jack Karras and Steve Galanopoulos. Nick Costantini (2-0) earned the win in relief of starter Eli Greenspon, and Jordan Sheinkop pitched 2 scoreless, no-hit innings for his second save.

Wauconda 9, Highland Park 5: Jack Ziolkowski homered, singled and drove in 3 runs for the host Bulldogs in the nonconference game.

Wauconda (8-5) got doubles from Brandon Gibis (2-for-4, RBI), Shawn Sundquist and Kyle Bock.

The Bulldogs’ 4-run sixth helped make a winner of Ryan Gick in relief.

Mundelein 4, Rolling Meadows 1: Bryan Wiener pitched a complete-game 2-hitter with 5 strikeouts and helped himself with a pair of doubles, as the hosts won the battle of Mustangs.

Ryan Borucki tripled for Mundelein (16-2), which jumped out in front with 3 runs in the second inning. Torr Randau doubled, and Thomas Gandolfi (stolen base) added a pair of singles.

Warren 13, Grant 3: Ben Dinter went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, leading the host Blue Devils’ 11-hit attack in the North Suburban Conference crossover.

Alex Letto and Pat Kenney also had big days at the plate for Warren (6-8), which won its third in a row. Letto tripled, doubled and knocked in 4 runs. Kenney also had a triple and double, and drove in one. Anthony Garza was 2-for-4 with a triple, and Jimmy Nickell (2-3) pitched 4 innings (2 runs, 0 earned) for the win.

For Grant, Jared Helmich went 2-for-3, and Simeon Lucas had a single and 2 RBI.

Palatine 6, Lake Zurich 2: Sean Eder accounted for half of the Bears’ 4 hits in their nonconference loss at home.

Palatine pulled even at 1-1 in the second and took the lead for good with another solo run in the third.

Lake Zurich (11-6) used three pitchers.

“We are going through a period of inconsistency at the plate,” said coach Gary Simon, whose Bears pounded out 12 hits in a win over Lakes on Friday. “I’m confident we’ll get it ironed out soon.”
