Barrington hands VH its first loss

Vernon Hills’ boys volleyball team is no longer undefeated.

The Cougars lost to Barrington 25-19, 25-18 in the championship match of the two-day Lake County tournament Saturday.

Stevenson defeated Libertyville 25-16, 25-20 for third place.

Vernon Hills (13-1) was led by Martin Niemczewski’s 34 kills and 24 digs over the two days (five matches). Thomas Robinson had 32 kills, 9 blocks and 22 digs for the Cougars. Ryan Opitz dished out 83 assists (191 of 193).

In its third-place match, Stevenson (12-2) got 4 kills from Brad Tiller and three apiece from Collin Ryan and Jason Fleischman.

Fleischman and Tiller had 11 and 9 kills, respectively, in the Patriots’ 18-25, 25-22, 25-20 loss to Barrington, after going 3-0 in pool play Friday.
