Bailey, Glenbard East edge Glenbard North
Dante Bailey poured in a game-high 24 points to lead Glenbard East to a 53-50 win over Glenbard North in first-day action at the District 87 Thanksgiving Tournament at Glenbard West. Glenbard South's Matt Jeske and Dusko Despot forced the issue with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Glenbard West 67, Glenbard North 55:
In the District 87 nightcap Michael Mache's 21 points led the way for the host Hilltoppers. Glenbard North got balanced scoring from Ryan Krueger, Josh Fleming and Sterling Hightower with 14, 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Waubonsie Valley 55, Deerfield 44:
Jared Brownridge scored 22 points with 9 rebounds and 4 steals to pace Waubonsie Valley at the Ed Molitor Thanksgiving Tournament in Palatine. Brandon Malby added 12 points and Bryan Jefferson 11 for the Warriors.
Neuqua Valley 70, Urban Prep 38:
At Riverside-Brookfield, Neuqua guard Tyler Sutton canned five 3-pointers and scored 29 points, with 6 rebounds, in the Wildcats' season-opening win. Jesse White scored 12 points off the bench and R.J. Miller led Neuqua with 8 assists.
Wheaton Academy 40, Downers Grove North 38:
Cameron Harvey scored 15 points and Drew Sandburg had 4 of his 10 points from the foul line in the fourth quarter as the Warriors won at their own tournament. Rob Mahlke scored 15 points for the Trojans.
Lake Park 50, Fremd 47:
Zack Wagner scored 6 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter at Fenton's Chuck Mitchell Tournament in Bensenville. Dominique Spencer added 12 points and Dave Prentis 10 for the Lancers.
Elk Grove 58, Fenton 30:
Tournament host Fenton was led by Herman DeGuia's 19 points.
St. Charles East 64, East Aurora 34:
Dominic Adduci and Patrick Woods will forever hold fond memories of their basketball debuts at St. Charles East.
Adduci, a sophomore guard who transferred from Wheaton Academy, drained four 3-pointers on the way to a 16-point effort while helping lead the Saints (1-0) to a convincing 64-34 victory over East Aurora (0-1) in Monday night's opening round of the 53rd annual St. Charles East/Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament.
Ahead 30-21 at halftime, the Saints turned the game into a rout by outscoring the Tomcats 34-13 in the second half of Woods' first game as St. Charles East head coach.
"It's one game but it's a great game when you win by 30," said Woods. "East Aurora is a program known for having solid teams year in and year out, so any time you can get a win like that against them it's a good thing.
"We'll take a win like that on opening night any day of the week."
Meanwhile, Adduci canned 5 of 7 shots from the field while enjoying his first game as a Saint.
"It was great, new coach and everything - it was awesome," said Adduci. "Coach (Woods) implemented a lot of things that helped everybody's game. I feel great. The fans are great, the teachers are excellent, and the coach is awesome."
Craig Brueske
