COD modifies summer calendar to meet student needs

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees recently approved a modified 2012 summer session calendar to better meet the needs of continuing full-time and part-time COD students, new students, high school students and recent high school graduates, reverse-transfer students who complete summer classes at COD that transfer back to their home college/university, and area elementary and secondary education teachers.

“The overarching goal of these modifications was to create an academic calendar that is more responsive to student needs and schedules over the summer months,” said Joe Collins, COD Executive Vice President. “Obviously, accommodating student schedules is important to us, especially during the summer when we have many reverse transfer students who are either catching up or getting ahead in the completion of their four-year degrees.”

The revised calendar is effective starting summer 2012. It contains two 5-week terms, one 8-week term and one 10-week term, with all sessions except for the first 5-week term concluding on the same date.

“We've adjusted the calendar so all classes are completed by Aug. 5, 2012,” Collins said. “This date allows for a decent break for students and faculty before they start the fall semester or return to their four-year college/university.”

The revised summer calendar will not reduce the number of course sections the College can offer next summer. In fact, Collins noted, in summer 2013, the room capacity for summer class sections will actually expand due to completed construction projects on campus.
