Barrington nabs crown at Prairie Ridge

For Barrington’s girls golf team, regionals served as a springboard for a run at the state tournament.

For Prairie Ridge, regionals were about moving forward after an unsatisfactory performance at the conference meet last week.

Both squads accomplished their objectives Wednesday.

The Fillies and Wolves finished second and third, respectively, at the Prairie Ridge Regional to advance to next week’s Buffalo Grove sectional.

“The girls are excited to have that challenge,” said Barrington coach Jodi Schoeck. “It will be a tough sectional. We need all six to be consistent on Monday. They can’t let anything worry them and just leave it all out on the course. That’s what it’s all about.”

Barrington freshman Julia Calbi fired a 3-under-par 70 to win medalist honors while teammate Heather Ciskowski shot a 77 to finish third individually.

Calbi putted tremendously all day, sinking a 10-footer for an eagle on 9 and approach shots on 15 and 18 landed within 2 feet to set up easy birdies.

“I didn’t miss many fairways which was crucial because there are so many trees that you can get into,” Calbi said. “I kept the ball in play and made sure I didn’t get into trouble. I played conservatively, not going for the pin but just trying for the center of the green.”

Ciskowski was in trouble from the get-go, finding a lateral hazard on the first hole, but the sophomore recovered to make par. Even better, the save gave her a boost of confidence.

Lindsey Martindale (91) and Sammy Carman (96) provided a lift to a Fillies squad that came in behind first-place Crystal Lake Central (331) by just 3 strokes.

“Our goal today was to advance to sectionals, so hopefully we can move on to an even bigger goal which is state,” Ciskowski said. “Today, we gave ourselves a chance.”

Prairie Ridge (362) finished third on its home course to advance to the sectional as a team for just the second time in recent history. Delainey Peterson (83) and Danielle Roulo (88) led the charge for the Wolves, who were eager to move on from a subpar showing at conference to extend their season another week.

“We weren’t at our best in conference, and we are hoping that when we come out on Monday that we play at our best,” said Prairie Ridge coach Patti Hie. “That’s always your goal, to peak at the end of the year.”

Freshman Annette Yandall (87) qualified individually for Wauconda after spending the season playing with the boys frosh-soph team.

“They treat me like one of the guys,” Yandall said. “It’s better to compete with them because they outhit me sometimes.”

Carmel (378) finished fourth, thanks to solid rounds from Rachel Fraher (92) and Jessica Trunzo (94). Courteney Fabri carded an 89 for Mundelein.
