COD culinary instructor wins National Showpiece Championship

College of DuPage Culinary instructor Nancy Carey recently won the 2011 National Showpiece Championship, held Aug. 26-27 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The event, held as part of the three-day Pastry Live Weekend 2011, challenged participants to create a showpiece in either sugar or chocolate. Carey and her partner, Andy Chlebana, had six hours to create their piece, which borrowed from the architecture of Frank O. Gehry, the scientific drawings of Ernst Haeckel and the sculptures of Lee Bontecou and Louise Bourgeois.

Carey earned her bachelor's degree in painting and drawing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago before attending the Culinary Institute of America to study pastry. She founded Red Hen Bread in Chicago and previous taught baking and pastry at Le Cordon Blue in Chicago. She currently teaches baking and pastry at COD.
