“Sita Sings the Blues” (USA) – Sept. 6

Directed by Nina Paley

Nina, an animator, is dumped via email by her husband after he moves to India, while Sita is a goddess separated from her beloved Lord and husband, Rama. The two stories parallel as three hilarious shadow puppets narrate this animated interpretation of the Indian epic Ramayana, set to the 1920s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw. (82 min.)

“Hadewijch” (France) – Oct. 4

Directed by Bruno Dumont

Celine is a 20-year-old theology student whose extreme commitment to Christ results in her being cast out of her convent by an alarmed Mother Superior who urges her to find her calling in the outside world. The pretty, soft-spoken girl befriends an Arab youth and forms a strong bond with his older brother, Nassir, who seems uniquely capable of understanding her dilemma -- the challenge of remaining faithful to a God who seems to have vanished from the world around her. (105 min.)

“Anita” (Argentina) – Nov. 22

Directed by Marcos Carnevale

Anita, a young woman with Down syndrome, lives a happy, routine life in Buenos Aires, being cared for by her mother. Following the bombing of the nearby Argentine Israelite Mutual Association, Anita is left to wander through the city, learning to care for herself along the way and touching the lives of those around her. (104 min.)
