New program helps smokers 'break the habit'

The Lake County Health Department's Tobacco Free Lake County program has launched a new program called “Break the Habit.”

This is a nicotine replacement therapy support program for Lake County residents who use the Illinois Tobacco Quitline. Eligible participants can get up to four boxes of nicotine replacement therapy patches for just $10 each (while supplies last) and receive free telephone-based counseling to quit their tobacco use.

Participants can pick up their Nicotine Replacement Therapy patches from Walgreens pharmacies in Highwood and Round Lake Beach, or from the Lake County Health Department in Waukegan.

The telephone-based counseling is available in Spanish and 150 other languages. Interested clients should call 1-866-QUIT-YES (784-8937).

The Tobacco Free Lake County program website: www.lakecountyil.gov/health/tobaccofree has additional quit resources for individuals, employers and healthcare providers.

In addition, you'll find classroom activities for teachers, information about the teen tobacco prevention youth group, and a link for smoke-free housing listings in Illinois.

For more information, please call 847-377-8090 or email program staff at: TFLC@lakecountyil.gov.

Funding for this program is provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
