Elgin Summer Theatre stages 'Annie' at Hemmens

Elgin Summer Theatre presents the ever-hopeful "Annie" at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way in downtown Elgin.

Performances for this much loved musical are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, July 15-23, and 3 p.m. Sundays, July 17 and 24. Tickets are $15.

"Annie" is directed by Charlie Brieger of Elgin and is the fourth production for the Elgin Summer Theatre after a 12-year hiatus. Other productions have included "Hair," "Grease" and last summer's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." Sponsored by the City of Elgin, EST is a showcase for local talent in all age ranges.

The original production of "Annie," inspired by Harold Gray's “Little Orphan Annie” comic strip was originally produced by the Goodspeed Opera House in 1976 before moving to Broadway, where it won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Book and Score. The original production of "Annie" is one of the top 20 longest running shows in Broadway history. Boasting one of Broadway's most memorable scores, including “It's a Hard-Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” and “Tomorrow,” it continues to be one of the most successful musicals ever.

Community members are invited to stop in before the show on July 17 and 24 to meet McGruff the Crime Dog and receive a free Child Safety Identification Kit!

Tickets may be purchased in person at The Hemmens Box Office, online at www.hemmens.org, or charge by phone at (847) 931-5900.
